Omoda 7, a super 5 kWh battery for the new full hybrid
A plug-in hybrid version is set to join the Chinese SUV range, featuring a battery with record capacity and cutting-edge technologies.
Key points
Among the many new products unveiled in Wuhu by the Chery Group is an innovative full-hybrid system which, from next year, will power a new version of the Omoda 7 SUV. In effect, it will mark the launch of a new line of self-charging hybrids that can be described as ‘Gen S’, or ‘Super’.
Omoda has not yet revealed all the features of this new system – which will undoubtedly be fitted to other models in the Chery Group in the future – but has disclosed that it will incorporate a battery with a capacity never before seen in this sector: 5 kWh. In other words, more than double that of the batteries used in the latest full-hybrid models currently on the market.
The Omoda 7 promises more than just a longer range with zero emissions
The most obvious advantage offered by this battery is that it ensures the vehicle can run on electric power alone for longer, resulting in both reduced petrol consumption to power the internal combustion engine and a greater overall range than that of competing full-hybrid SUVs. But these are not the only strengths of the technology making its debut with the Omoda 7. In fact, the battery’s peak capacity also enables driving modes that are unusual for a full-hybrid car.
Omoda 7: raising the bar for comfort and usability
The new battery, which is thought to be one of the new-generation semi-solid-state batteries developed by the Chinese group and set to be fitted to many models from the end of this year, will not only improve the powertrain’s efficiency but will also enhance comfort. Indeed, it will support the Super Quiet mode, which reduces powertrain noise during start-ups, acceleration and at motorway speeds. In short, according to the announcement, it will also improve the driving experience and the in-car environment. Furthermore, it will optimise the management of certain vehicle functions and services. For example, the air conditioning.
Thanks to its battery capacity, the new version of the Omoda 7 will also feature technology currently offered only by certain plug-in hybrid and fully electric models. This means it will have much larger batteries that can be recharged from external sockets. This is V2L, or vehicle-to-load, which allows up to 2.2 kWh of power to be supplied to external devices.
