Omoda X redefines the concept of an SUV
The concept unveiled in China serves as a showcase of the styling and technology of the Chinese brand’s next generation of models. The production model is due to be launched at the end of next year
Key points
Omoda is looking to the future and, although it is a very young brand, it is breaking with the past by unveiling Omoda X. The model, unveiled during the International User Summer event organised by the Chery Group in Wuhu, China, is currently classified as a concept car. In reality, it is neither a stylistic exercise nor a showcase for technologies still in development. In fact, it is ready for production, which is set to begin towards the end of next year, although certain details – such as the exact dimensions and the powertrains, which will in any case be electrified – remain top secret.
Omoda X, a striking design inspired by Transformers
The design of the future SUV is the result of a significant evolution of the Omoda 4’s design, which – after numerous announcements and even name changes – is about to be launched in Italia. The Omoda X’s styling is defined by a design language which, according to the manufacturer, draws inspiration from the world of futuristic Mecha robots and marks a clear departure from that of the current Omoda range, which is based on fluid, sinuous forms. The design of the new SUV conveys robustness, sportiness and a distinct aptitude for hardcore off-roading, with proportions, the robustness imparted by taut surfaces joined by sharp angles, the sides devoid of curves and geometrically shaped – with a predominance of sheet metal surfaces over glass – the muscular, square-cut wheel arches, and the vertical lines of the front and rear. The originally off-road-inspired look is completed by underbody protection and specialist Pirelli Scorpion All-Terrain Plus tyres, and is accompanied by a ground clearance of 20 centimetres, fully in line with that of true off-road vehicles which, according to the manufacturer, helps to enable a fording depth of up to 70 centimetres.
Omoda X: revolutionary on the inside too
The interior of the Omoda X offers a good amount of space relative to its length – which the manufacturer states is close to 4.70 metres – and its wheelbase, which is expected to be between 2.70 and 2.80 metres. The interior design also stands out completely from that of the other Omoda models. The layout of the storage compartments, characterised by a futuristic style, is both striking and high-tech. The dashboard is interrupted by the central console extending beyond its edge, creating the distinct impression that the front of the cabin is clearly divided into two zones; it incorporates the 13.2-inch vertical infotainment display which, contrary to current trends, does not merge with the instrument cluster, which is housed within a 10.25-inch screen. The system incorporates an AI-powered voice assistant, video games and karaoke – much to the delight of Asian markets. On the centre console between the seats there are numerous physical controls and, inspired by those found in Lamborghinis, the start button is protected by a red flap.
Omoda X: exclusively electrified powertrains, all-wheel drive and safety technologies
As previously mentioned, Omoda has not disclosed which powertrains the new SUV will feature, but it is reasonable to assume that, being based on a multi-energy platform – perhaps of a new generation – it will offer full-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. In short, these are the classic options from Omoda’s range, although they will be offered in a targeted manner depending on the markets and, of course, subject to any possible developments that may emerge in the coming months. As clearly shown on the rear wheels, the Omoda X will also be available with all-wheel drive. Among the technological innovations, the thermal imaging system stands out: it detects obstacles up to 100 metres away and, one might say, enhances the ADAS suite.
