OpenAI, the company that produces ChatGPT, is entering the voice assistant business and has unveiled a new technology that can clone a person's voice. However, the technology will not yet be released publicly due to security concerns.
The new technology is called Voice Engine, and was unveiled just over a week after OpenAI itself filed a trademark application for the name. With this technology, OpenAI claims, it will be possible to recreate a person's voice simply from just 15 seconds of recording that person speaking.
Restricted to "beta testers"
.OpenAI states that it plans to release Voice Engine as a preview to a few 'beta testers', 'but that it does not intend to release this technology widely, at least at this time', because of the dangers of misuse.
"We know that generating speeches with a voice resembling that of real people carries serious risks, which are especially important in an election year," the San Francisco-based company said in a note.
In New Hampshire, authorities are investigating robo-calls sent to thousands of voters shortly before the presidential primaries that featured an artificial intelligence-generated voice imitating President Joe Biden.
