OpenAI, Altman: “No to an IPO in 2026. We’ll focus on safety first”
The founder of the company that developed ChatGPT has pushed back the prospect of an IPO to 2027
“Given everything that is happening in terms of security, now would not be the right time to go public, and we do not feel any pressure to do so.” This was stated by the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, in an interview with Fortune magazine. “I’d say no, it won’t happen in 2026. We still have a lot of work to do,” he replied specifically when asked whether the IPO would take place this year.
Altman also hinted that OpenAI and other companies at the forefront of the AI sector might be close to signing an agreement to slow down the development of artificial intelligence and to collaborate in tackling the security risks, according to a report in Fortune. OpenAI and its rival Anthropic are both preparing to go public. The two companies have privately submitted the necessary listing documentation to the US authorities and are aiming for a valuation of close to one trillion dollars.
