Possible settlement in the federal case concerning addiction to Facebook and Instagram
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Meta is in talks with several US states regarding a possible out-of-court settlement in the ongoing federal case concerning minors’ addiction to Facebook and Instagram. This is according to a report by Bloomberg. Several attorneys general have also called press conferences for today.
When contacted by AFP, Meta and the four main states involved in the case (California, Colorado, New Jersey and Kentucky) did not immediately comment on this information.
The attorneys general involved in the Oakland case, leading a coalition of 29 states, have been seeking since mid-August to prove that Meta – which has already lost twice in court this year – lied to parents by claiming that Instagram and Facebook were neither addictive nor dangerous for children. They also claim that Meta breached a federal law relating to the data of children under the age of 13.
They are calling for penalties of up to 200 billion dollars and a complete overhaul of the two platforms, which are used daily by 3.6 billion people. The jury’s verdict, expected in late September or early October, will be advisory to Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who will decide the case on her own.
