Paris Salon, here is Renault Emblème: the concept car that prefigures the sustainable car throughout its life cycle

The show car incubator of innovations for tomorrow's car does not anticipate a new model but concentrates insights, solutions and technologies that the Renault group wants to use to accelerate the zero carbon footprint from 2040 onwards

A sleek shooting brake destined, it seems, to remain a concept car in its own right, the Emblème is the ambassador of Renaulutionaria. That is, the decarbonisation strategy of Renault, and the brands in its group, which the brand is developing together with Ampere and their respective partners and which is based on intelligent and feasible combinations. Thus, using recycled materials of natural origin or with a reduced carbon footprint, adopting production processes based on renewable energies and rationalised to reduce CO2 emissions to a minimum, considering second life and circularity, using new technologies and powertrains as well as new styling canons. In short, Renault's goal with Emblème is to emit 90 per cent less greenhouse gases (CO2 equivalent or CO2e) than equivalent cars produced today, i.e. only 5 tonnes of CO2e 'from cradle to grave' .

Renault Emblème, design in the service of efficiency

The Emblème is a shooting-brake with an elegant and sporty line with a strong personality, carefully defined at the aerodynamic level. In fact, the design supports efficiency not only with its sinuous silhouette but also, for example, by replacing the classic rear-view mirrors with two cameras inserted in the front wheel arches, hiding the windscreen wipers under the bonnet lid and inserting the door handles in the concave and convex surfaces of the sides. In addition, it places two deflectors above the bonnet that optimise the flow of air towards the windscreen, air intakes in the bumper shield that direct the air flow behind the solid wheel rims that channel air along the entire length of the flanks. The Bwt Alpine F1 team also contributed to the aerodynamic definition, notably by developing a true flat bottom that incorporates an active diffuser that can tilt downwards and backwards to minimise drag. In the end, the result is a Cx of 0.25, which is truly outstanding. The eco-design brought to the forefront by the Emblème not only rationally dresses a car that is 4.80 metres long and 1.52 metres high, together with its 2.90 metre wheelbase and the layout of the AmpR Medium platform (a synthesis of those of the Scénic and Mégane E-Tech and the Alpine 390 that parades with the Emblème at the Paris motor show) defines a spacious interior. Lastly, the design also considers the hunt for the gram with the careful use of materials and optimising components to bring the Emblème's weight down to 1,750 kg, including batteries, and boost efficiency.

Renault Emblème, a long way in a short time with bi-energy powertrain

The Emblème's 217-horsepower, rare-earth-free, wound-rotor electric powertrain is located at the rear and is bi-energy, paraphrasing the bi-fuel concept of cars with Ice engines. In fact, it is powered both by a 40 kW nickel manganese cobalt battery promising a range of a hundred kilometres mainly suitable for daily urban use, but compact and light and less expensive than long-distance ones, and by a 30 kW fuel-cell system suitable for long journeys, fuelled by hydrogen contained in a 2.8 kg tank for a range of 350 kilometres. The speed with which the hydrogen can be refuelled, according to Renault, allows the Emblème to cover a thousand kilometres in a time equivalent to that required by a car with an internal combustion engine.
