Patrizia - a global real estate investment manager - has launched CiviSmart, which will become one of Italy's (and Europe's) leading independent smart street lighting platforms. The new company brings together three previously acquired smart lighting operators - Ottima, Selettra and Atlantico - into a single national smart city infrastructure platform.
CiviSmart is the result of several years of targeted investment by Patrizia's Smart City Infrastructure Fund (Scif), which has expanded its presence in Italy in the Smart City sector from 2022. With more than 380,000 lighting points managed in 200 municipalities, CiviSmart aims to play a key role in supporting the energy transition in Italy and achieving urban digitisation goals. To lead this new phase of growth, CiviSmart CEO Riccardo Amoroso has been appointed.
Already active as a national operator, CiviSmart is growing beyond smart lighting to offer a full range of smart city solutions and position itself as a key partner for municipalities. For example, in Chioggia it has implemented smart traffic management, a video analytics network, variable message signage panels, a city-wide Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) and a fibre optic infrastructure supporting IoT (Internet-of-Things) services such as environmental monitoring, smart parking and energy metering.
In Venice, CiviSmart manages over 450 public buildings, integrating lighting, energy efficiency and smart monitoring. In Puglia, it is developing 30 near-zero energy buildings Nzeb (Nearly Zero Energy Building) with renewable energy and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (Hvac) upgrades, as well as insulation improvements. A centralised digital platform coordinates these initiatives, while the company's scale and financial strength enable optimisation of investment and innovation across Italy.
"CiviSmart," said the new CEO, Riccardo Amoroso, "is the ideal partner for public administrations that want to improve the quality of life in their communities through the adoption of smart technologies and sustainable solutions.
Since 2022, Scif has made a series of strategic acquisitions in the smart lighting sector in Italy, supporting the transformation of public lighting into an enabler of energy efficiency, digital services and urban safety.
