Pensions, Inps error: here is who has to pay back up to EUR 1,000
Between 15 and 20 thousand pensioners are called upon to repay the sum mistakenly awarded by the Social Security Institute in March: repayment in one lump sum (up to EUR 150) or in 8 instalments
Key points
There are between 15 and 20 thousand pensioners who, due to an error on the part of the Inps, were paid up to EUR 1,000 in March and who are called upon to repay the sum: if the amount is up to EUR 150, the repayment will be made in April, if it is higher, it will be limitised from 1 May.
The deduction recognised in 2025
Let us take a step back. With the Budget Law 2025, the cut in the contribution wedge was transformed into a tax bonus of up to EUR 20,000 and into a deduction for employees with incomes between EUR 20,000 and EUR 40,000.
This deduction for incomes between EUR 20,000 and EUR 40,000, which was already recognised by the Inps in the credit adjustment in the March 2026 pay slip on a limited number of positions, on the basis of tax indications, was instead found not to be due in some situations (incomes assimilated to employment such as supplementary pensions and replacement allowances).
Between May and December, recovery in instalments of up to one thousand euro
The recovery in instalments of sums wrongly paid out by the INPS to pensioners but not due, will be activated by the Social Security Institution as from May 2026, in a maximum number of eight instalments, instead of a single payment, thus up to the month of December.
A dedicated coupon in April to pay back up to EUR 150
The Inps also informs that it has arranged for an additional payment in April that neutralises for that month the withholding already preset for the full amount. However, with effect from 1 April, at the same time as the pension payment, a one-off recovery will be triggered for those who have to repay up to €150 in a dedicated coupon, accompanied by a specific annotation illustrating the operation performed.
