High voltage in the night
The government experienced a couple of hours of high tension during the night, at the most delicate moment of the examination of the manoeuvre in the Senate Budget Committee. At the turn of the midnight hour, the League raised tough opposition to the squeeze on pensions that would have been used to cover measures for businesses, a measure that was then shelved after two passages: a phone call from the leader of the Leghist group Massimiliano Romeo to Giorgetti, from his own party; and followed, as we learn, by a call with Giorgetti himself, the Minister for Relations with Parliament Luca Ciriani, the undersecretary for the Economy Federico Freni, the State Accountant Daria Perrotta and the two undersecretaries to the Presidency of the Council, Alfredo Mantovano and Giovanbattista Fazzolari. These are the hours when Giorgia Meloni is busy in Brussels at the crucial moment of the European Council that overnight decided on the 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine.
Disturbing her at that stage is impossible, she will be briefed a few hours later and will be anything but enthusiastic about the tensions that have arisen, as has happened whenever internal government problems have occurred during one of her missions abroad. Particularly in the League, from where dense contacts with Giorgetti have been taking place since the evening.
Romeo: "I called Giorgetti, he too against the pension squeeze"
The League throws water on the fire. 'No internal clash within the League,' Senate group leader Massimiliano Romeo wanted to clarify. "I called Minister Giorgetti and he too supported the thesis that it was possible to use alternative funds to the squeeze on pensions, including the intervention on the windows. The Mef technicians and the Ragioneria instead,' he added, 'insisted on pensions and this went on for hours. So we decided to cancel those measures, making a lighter amendment'.
