Cars and motorbikes: personalised number plates are on their way. Here’s how much they’ll cost
The change announced by the Prime Minister is set out in the new Highway Code
So far, we’ve seen them in films (“Outatime” featuring the De Lorean from Back to the Future, Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters) and in TV series (“Robin 1” on Magnum P.I.’s Ferrari 308 GTS). In the future, cars and motorbikes with personalised number plates will also be seen on Italian roads.
The news was announced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting that approved the Budget Bill: ‘A measure that could be described as a bit of fun,’ she said, ‘we are introducing the option for those who wish to do so to have personalised number plates: you’ll be able to let your imagination run wild, more or less as you see fit, though obviously at a cost. And something tells me that Italians’ creativity could really come into its own here.’
The cost
The option to choose numbers and letters for one’s car number plate is provided for in the legislative decree that reformed the Highway Code, approved by the government on 13 October. This option is already available for classic cars, and a fee schedule has been established for it.
Paid service
For cars, the front and rear number plates, in all sizes, ‘including standard fittings’, will cost 500 euros, payable to the State Printing Office, to which 20 per cent (i.e. 100 euros) as a surcharge payable to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which is responsible for delivering the plates to the Motorizzazione Civile. The total cost of the licence plates will be 600 euros.
For motorbikes, the rear number plate, ‘including the self-adhesive mounts’, will cost 300 euros, plus a 20 per cent surcharge for the MIT. Total: 360 euros.
