Peru: impeachment for Dina Boluarte, Jerì president
The Peruvian parliament voted to impeach Dina Boluarte amid growing public insecurity and political tensions. The president of the parliament replaces her
The Peruvian Parliament has voted to impeach President Dina Boluarte. The accusation of 'permanent moral incapacity' was the central topic of the impeachment motion and the presidential succession immediately passed to José Jerí, in accordance with current regulations. The president of the Peruvian Parliament, 38-year-old José Jeri, in fact assumed the presidency of the Andean country after Boluarte's ousting, following the filing of several motions to that effect, against the backdrop of a security crisis in the country.
It is one of the most sensational episodes of presidential removal in Peru's recent history, in a context of serious institutional and social crisis. The impeachment process had started yesterday, when a group of deputies from different parties filed four motions against Boluarte.
These motions, supported by at least 34 parliamentarians, cited serious allegations of corruption (including the case known as 'Rolexgate') and the executive branch's inability to deal with the growing insecurity of citizens as the main reasons. In order to approve the president's removal, the law required at least 87 votes in the 130-member unicameral Congress, a figure that was vastly exceeded in the final session. Boluarte's ousting was promoted by the parties in parliament (Renovación Popular, Alianza para el Progreso, Fuerza Popular, Podemos Perú, Avanza País, Acción Popular, Somos Perú, among others) that kept her in power for two years and ten months.
