Petrol, prices continue to fall in August

The fall in prices at the pump along the Italian distribution network continued in the second half of August, driven by the trend in the international markets for raw materials and refined products. On Thursday, 28 August, on the eve of the last summer exodus, petrol was confirmed at EUR 1.70 per litre and diesel at EUR 1.63 per litre, according to the Ministry for Business and the Made in Italy.

According to the latest update, the average prices for the week certified by the Ministry of the Environment stand at EUR 1.69 per litre for petrol and EUR 1.62 for diesel. Back to May levels.

In a note, Mimit points out that this is 'a downward trend that has essentially characterised the whole of 2025, interrupted only in the middle two weeks of June due to tensions in the Middle East. According to the latest data from Mimit's Fuel Price Observatory, the average recorded in August 2025 is also for the same month the lowest since 2021, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine'.

Again according to the Ministry's survey, compared to August 2024 prices are 11.5 cents per litre lower for petrol and 6 cents lower for diesel; the gap grows further when compared to August 2023, when petrol was 23.4 cents more expensive and diesel 19.2. Even more marked is the comparison with August 2022, when - net of the excise duty reduction then in force - the price was 37.9 cents per litre higher for petrol and 45.5 cents for diesel.

"The Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy will continue to monitor price trends, reporting any anomalies at points of sale to the Guardia di Finanza on a weekly basis, to ensure transparency and fairness in the market," the note concludes.
