Pichetto: 'From Italy 3.4 billion for the climate. No backward steps on the Paris Agreement
For the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Italy has exceeded the target set by the G20
Key points
Italy has exceeded the target set by the G20. This was said during the press conference on the Cop30 by the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
From 838 million to 3.44 billion
Italy's contribution to climate finance, in fact, increased from EUR 838 million in 2023 to EUR 3.44 billion in 2024.
'At Cop29 we had a long battle,' said Pichetto Fratin, 'and we closed many hours after the deadline with the agreement on climate finance. A 300 billion global agreement.
"No backtracking on Paris Agreement"
Then, the reference to the 2015 Paris Agreement, the international treaty that aims to combat climate change by limiting the global temperature increase to below 2 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels.
"No backward steps are allowed" for Pichetto Fratin. "Italy has reached 50% of energy production from renewable sources. We have closed on the continental side with coal. We are on the way. At the limit one can discuss the speed. But not the action. We still have a lot to do on the adaptation side, but let's not forget that we are a long country in the middle of the Mediterranean, with many complexities to deal with'.
