Plastic packaging: growing collection 2025, recycling at 49.6 per cent

By 2025, urban separate collection in Italy will have reached almost 1.3 million tonnes of plastic packaging, equal to a per capita collection of 27 kg per inhabitant, an increase of 3.75% compared to 2024. These are the results that emerged during the annual assembly of Corepla, the consortium for the collection, recycling and recovery of plastic packaging.

The number of municipalities served by the consortium system is also on the rise: 7,534, covering 98% of the Italian population of approximately 58 million citizens.

In 2025, Corepla sent 1,180,000 tonnes of packaging for recycling, of which 970,000 tonnes were actually recycled. In relation to the consumer market, the recycled share corresponds to 49.6%, in line with the European target of 50% by 2025.

Sardinia once again this year confirms itself as the region with the highest national per capita figure (36.7 kg per inhabitant), followed by Liguria (35 kg), Veneto (30.9 kg) and Campania (30.6 kg). On the other hand, the values for Trentino-Alto Adige (17.9 kg) and Basilicata (18.8 kg) remain more contained, despite the widespread growth in all Italian regions.

"2025 confirms the solidity and evolutionary capacity of the Corepla model, based on the collaboration between companies, institutions, citizens, and operators in the supply chain," confirms Giovanni Cassuti, Corepla president. "In a scenario characterised by profound regulatory and market transformations," he adds, "the consortium has continued to invest in process innovation and the development of solutions capable of increasing the value of collected plastic packaging, strengthening the entire recycling chain.
