Now online is 'Fentanyl, the devil's molecule', the new podcast by Biagio Simonetta, which recounts in six episodes the contemporary tragedy of fentanyl, the synthetic opiate responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in the United States.
Between direct testimonies, official data and international investigations, the podcast accompanies the listener on a journey that starts on the streets of San Francisco, passes through clandestine laboratories in Mexico and arrives at the Chinese ports from which chemical precursors leave. But it does not forget to analyse what could soon happen in Europe.
Each episode - lasting about twenty minutes - explores a piece of the fentanyl supply chain: from victims to broken families, from drug cartels to the role of large digital platforms, and political and international responsibilities.
It is not a story about drugs. It is a story of power, the market and desperation. 'The devil's molecule' is not a journalistic stretch, because it only takes two milligrams of fentanyl to cause death. And the CDC calls it 'the leading cause of death among young American adults'.
