Record-breaking Pokémon card sold for EUR 16.5 million
American youtuber Logan Paul sold the card after buying it in 2021 for 5.3 million. It is one of the rarest specimens in the world
Famous YouTuber and wrestler Logan Paul broke all records in the collectible card market, selling an extremely rare Pokémon card for $16.5 million ($16,492,000 to be precise), including auction fees, according to US auction house Goldin, based in Runnemede, New Jersey.
The Record Card
The card, a Pikachu Illustrator, is considered one of the rarest and best-preserved examples in Pokémon history. It was designed by Atsuko Nishida in 1998 and to date there are estimated to be only a few dozen in circulation. The one sold by the youtuber is considered the only one with a quality rating of 10. Paul bought it in 2021 for $5.3 million, already a record sum at the time. Today's sale thus tripled the value of the initial investment. The auction, which was streamed on YouTube, set a world record for a paper sold in this way.
Who bought it
The buyer was venture capitalist A.J. Scaramucci, son of financier and former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. Scaramucci described the purchase as the first step in a 'planetary treasure hunt', which will include artefacts such as T-Rex fossils and even the American Declaration of Independence.
