Pole and victory for Sainz in Mexico. Norris advances and dreams of a world championship

Bad Verstappen, off the podium because of his mistakes

A fine red success, and also a third place, with the regret that it could have been another Ferrari one-two, the second in a row, two weeks after Austin. This time without the concomitance of a Jannick Sinner win, which had brought Leclerc more luck. Overall, this is the fifth race won by the Reds this season, in 2024, which hasn't happened since Arrivabene's management.

This time even without emergency appendectomy surgery in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Badly Verstappen, off the podium because of his mistakes that cost him a lot: a high price that could be fatal for the dream of a fourth world title. Good but not very good Norris, who does not have the perfect car for those who should be dreaming of the final kick: for him a recovery of ten points on the reigning champion but still so much gap to close from here to the end of the year, given that now the gap is 47 points, with two sprint races in the next four remaining rounds.

This time, then, it was thanks to an excellent pace shown relentlessly throughout the Mexican weekend, culminating in Carlos' pole position and, yesterday, Sainz jr's fourth career victory. half that of Leclerc, the second this year. A true, deserved domination. Even if not very functional for the drivers' classification: but given that he was faster on the track, one could hardly imagine helping his team-mate, despite the fact that he is still mathematically in contention for second place.

However, the Scuderia di Maranello, on the strength of the recent developments made to the car, came to Mexico City with the aim of confirming the competitiveness shown in Texas. Moreover, the pole position was a surprise, as Ferrari has not traditionally been the fastest car in qualifying for some time. However, the joy of the pole start was immediately tempered by the knowledge that the long opening straight would make it difficult to keep the lead. And indeed, Sainz was easily overtaken by the reigning champion, went straight and gave up the position. But the high-adrenaline confrontation was short-lived, due to the immediate entry of the safety car for a nasty contact at the start between Tsunoda and Albon. So the race was 'frozen' until lap seven, but already by lap nine the Spaniard's Ferrari, with the help of the Drs, had easily regained the lead to the end. Talking about the two crashed drivers: it's been a while since the Thai driver has had a good run, as he wasted a start from ninth position, wrecked his Japanese colleague's car and forced the race direction to bring out the safety car. Only two days earlier, in free practice, he lost control of the single-seater and hit the blameless Ferrari rookie Oliver Bearman. On the other hand, in Williams, after Sergeant's departure, Albon suffered more pressure because the newcomer, the Argentinean Colapinto, immediately overtook him, managing to score five points in the two races in which he finished in the top ten. Young Franco is gaining sympathy and admiration in the paddock, but also among the sponsors: it is rumoured that he could be the ideal replacement for Perez at Red Bull and, on this occasion, also a good pretext to replace a 'Latin' grand prix with a return to Argentina, suppressed in 1998 after seeing Michael Schumacher triumph in Ferrari.

With two drivers down in the race and Sainz overtaking, although not the most straightforward or surefooted, the race fires up for quite a few laps. In particular, a tussle between Norris and Verstappen is also triggered, with a double run off the track: it's not just a fight for second and third place, but for the 2023 world title. It benefits Leclerc, who climbs to second place and takes advantage of the direct clash between Red Bull and Verstappen just as had happened in Austin.

Mercedes in the middle: Hamilton overtakes Russell but stays off the podium. Haas surprises

In this chaos, however, the Mercedes, who started on the third row, continued on fifth and sixth, unable to take advantage of the confusion. They would however finish fourth and fifth, with Hamilton managing to get back in front of young Russell, albeit only towards the end. After an endless battle, ended only on lap 66 thanks to Drs. And behind, no longer a surprise, were both Haas: with Perez and Piastri in the early stages of the race still far from the points zone, the American team didn't miss the chance to make a splash in the important grand prix followed and financed by so many American partners. In the end, both went on to score points, with Magnussen seventh and Hulkemberg ninth. In the middle was Piastri, unable to climb back up the slope after a very difficult qualifying that had seen him go off the track as early as Q1: going off the track and touching a kerb, he had been forced to return to the pits without, however, managing to set a decent lap in good time.

Red Bull: Perez figure

It is almost no longer news to say that Verstappen does not win this round either. And the drubbing on Mexican Sunday is indeed memorable but not fatal. In the meantime, the home driver 'punctures' Q1, so many times that he places even worse than Stroll in this statistic. And in the race he finishes last, also helped by a desperate strategy by the team to try and snatch the famous fastest lap point at the end, even though Perez, by not cutting into the top ten, would never have been awarded it. Penalised by five seconds for starting in an advanced position on the grid after the formation lap, the home favourite probably started for the last time in front of his home crowd in a Formula 1 Grand Prix because with this yield it is unlikely any team will want him in 2025. And anyway, he is about to become a father for the fourth time: a good reason to stop even motu proprio. But the bad figure of the bibitari does not end there: Verstappen's race degenerates by his own hand, as he gets a good 20 seconds penalty that he has to serve in the race.

Alonso, retirement and party postponed

The 'grandfather' of Formula 1 currently at the wheel, born in 1981, had to retire his single-seater on lap 15. Alonso has been in Formula 1 for so long that he has raced against 15 per cent of all drivers of all time who have participated in a Formula 1 grand prix. He will reach his 400th grand prix but given the bad luck in Mexico City it may be better to count the actual starts, so he will have to wait until the Qatar race, the penultimate of the season. And on closer inspection, the absolute statistic could be much higher, but on the other hand in his 'sabbatical years' he has shown himself to be one of the most versatile drivers of all time, trying Indycar, with the unsuccessful dream of winning on ovals, then moving on to rallies with a few successes and the Dakar, but he did much better with his exploit in Toyota, winning the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours for two consecutive years.

Two penalties for Verstappen, rankings still open

Ten seconds for pushing Norris off the track at Turn 4, while both gave the position to Leclerc. Ten seconds for overtaking him at the 'snake' corner, the tricky one in the second sector, ending up in the run-off lane. And from there a very strong charge for the reigning champion who is called to pit stop on lap 27, even earlier than many predicted. The result is a vertical descent to position number 15, third last ahead of only Perez and Stroll among those remaining in the race. But unlike the Mexican, at least, in a few laps he clearly regained the pace of the best and was back in the points zone, closing in a dignified sixth place eleven seconds behind Russell.

In terms of the world championship lead, the margin over the first of the pursuers, Lando Norris, narrows to 47 lengths: but given that there hasn't been a win since June, this margin is destined to fall further between now and the end of the year. It is not certain, however, that he will lose the world championship, because if Newey is no longer making the best of his team, Max is making his own: finishing sixth with that stress and without the help of his team-mate was still a small feat. Surely the federation wanted him to understand that he has to calm down between now and the end of the year, because a double penalty like that hasn't been seen for a long time. Nevertheless, he somehow got away with it because eight points, with what he did, is also too much.

However, among the constructors, Red Bull is already largely compromised, sinking to third place: Ferrari, on the other hand, after the poor performance of Perez and Piastri, not only pulls away from the defending champions, but can even speculate on attacking McLaren, now on twenty-nine points, more closely.

Nothing new, however, further down in the rear ranks: Alpine is back with just one point, after four races of total fasting, while the Swiss team Kick Sauber is still incredibly at zero, who, despite the Ferrari engines, have never performed so poorly in ten years.

Formula 1 returns only a week from now for the 48th Grand Prix of Brazil, where there will be one of the last two Sprint Races of 2024.
