#senontiportononparto. This is the hashtag chosen by the State Police for its new campaign to combat an odious and uncivilised phenomenon, that of abandoning pets in the street. According to Enpa, 127 animals are abandoned every 24 hours. We spoke about this with the Chief Commissioner of the State Police Alessandro Santoro during a video interview with Sole 24 Ore.

A phenomenon that creates repercussions on road traffic

.

Abandonment is an odious phenomenon, which increases sharply during the summer season, thanks to the holidays. "This phenomenon,' explains Chief Constable Santoro, 'creates several problems, both from an ethical point of view, because it involves the abandonment of a sentient being such as a pet can be, and because it creates considerable repercussions on road traffic. One of the most complex operations for the operators of the State Police, the Police Force and the Traffic Police, is precisely the case of stray animals on the road. By their nature they are uncontrolled and create numerous safety problems for them and for motorists. And anyone who sees an abandoned dog should call the emergency numbers to alert the police.

You risk arrest or a fine of up to 10,000 euro

.

The penal code punishes the abandonment of animals. "Let us recall," explains Chief Commissioner Santoro, "that Article 727 of the criminal code provides for anyone who abandons pets to be imprisoned for up to one year or fined between one thousand and ten thousand euro. The same penalty for anyone who mistreats animals".

In the event of an accident, the obligation to call for help

.

"In the case of accidents involving animals the highway code is clear. There is an obligation for those who cause an accident involving an animal to intervene and take action to call for help as quickly as possible. This obligation also applies to anyone who is involved in the accident or who witnesses the accident'.

How to transport pets by car

.

How to transport our animal friends safely? 'The Highway Code is clear on the point. Only one animal,' Santoro recalls, 'can be transported inside the passenger compartment, as long as there are safe conditions for the driver. More than one animal must be carried either in carriers or in the rear compartment, with the precaution of using gratings to prevent the animal from escaping". Happy
