The Pope: 'Guarantee Venezuela's sovereignty, ensure the rule of law'
The Pontiff calls for overcoming violence in Venezuela, defending human rights and promoting justice, while praying for the victims of the Swiss tragedy and calling for brotherly love.
"With a heart full of concern I follow the developments of the situation in Venezuela - said the Pope at the Angelus -. The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail above all other considerations and lead them to overcome violence and embark on paths of justice and peace, guaranteeing the sovereignty of the country, assuring the rule of law inscribed in the Constitution, respecting the human and civil rights of each and all, and working to build together a serene future of collaboration, stability and concord, with special attention to the poorest who suffer because of the difficult economic situation". Faith in peace
"Let us continue to have faith in the God of Peace: let us pray and be in solidarity with the peoples who suffer because of wars". Pope Leo XIV said this at the Angelus. "With a soul full of concern I follow the developments of the situation in Venezuela.
The tragedy in Switzerland
"I wish to express again my closeness to all those who are in sorrow because of the tragedy that occurred in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. I assure my prayers for the young people who died, for the injured and for their families". Pope Leo XIV said this at the Angelus.
Dignity of the person
"Towards man, our commitment must be equally consistent. If God has become one of us, every human creature is a reflection of him, bears his image within itself, harbours a spark of his light; and this calls us to recognise in each person his innoctable dignity and to practise mutual love towards one another. Thus, the Incarnation also asks us for a concrete commitment to the promotion of fraternity and communion, so that solidarity may become the criterion for human relations, for justice and peace, for the care of the most fragile and the defence of the weak"'. This was said by Pope Leo XIV as he looked out of the window of his study, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, to recite the Angelus with the faithful and pilgrims gathered in St Peter's Square.
