Pope Leo XIV is recovering well following his operation. Trump: ‘I hope he gets well soon’
The Pope has resumed walking and eating; his test results at the Gemelli Hospital are within normal limits. The US President: “Cancer is a serious matter, but the prognosis appears to be improving.”
Pope Leo XIV’s post-operative recovery is proceeding as expected; he is currently being treated at the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome following surgery to remove a tumour from his right lung. Blood tests and a chest X-ray carried out on Wednesday confirmed that his condition is normal for the type of operation performed. The Pontiff has begun walking around his room, has undergone respiratory physiotherapy and has resumed a regular diet. His mood is also good: according to Vatican sources, Leo XIV concelebrated Mass in a room set up on the tenth floor of the hospital.
The Holy See Press Office Director, Matteo Bruni, confirmed that the Pope is expected to remain in hospital for around a week. The first night following the operation passed without incident. The Pope’s brother, Louis Prevost, also told the US broadcaster Newsmax that he had received reassuring news: the Pontiff was “awake, in good condition and in no pain”.
Trump’s message and Vance’s prayers
US President Donald Trump expressed his support for the Pope, wishing Leo XIV a speedy recovery. “I hope Pope Leo gets well soon. Cancer is a serious matter, but the prognosis seems to be improving. We want to send him our love and best wishes. I hope he feels better and recovers soon,” he said whilst speaking to journalists on the sidelines of an election campaign event.
The day before, a message had also been posted by Vice-President JD Vance, who had taken to X to express his family’s support for the Pope. “Our family continues to pray for the good health and full recovery of Pope Leo XIV. May God grant him strength as he works to regain his health,” wrote Vance, adding that he hoped the Pope would know that “millions of American Christians are thinking of him”.
The United States Ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch, also expressed his best wishes to LaPresse: “Our thoughts and prayers are with His Holiness, and we wish him renewed strength and good health in the days ahead.”
