The 21st edition of the Trento Festival of Economics will be held from 20 to 24 May 2026. The event, the formula of which was devised in 2022 by the Il Sole 24 ORE Group together with Trentino Marketing on behalf of the Autonomous Province of Trento and with the contribution of the Municipality of Trento and the University of Trento, has seen the "squirrel population" grow extraordinarily, reaching over 140,000 attendees in four years. And it is precisely the great success with the public and the rich programme of meetings on the programme schedule that convinced the organisers to introduce an important novelty in 2026: to increase the number of days of the event to five, bringing together top-level representatives of the economic, academic, political and business community at national and international level.

The five days in Trento will become fundamental for anyone who wants to understand where the world and the economy are going today, as captured by the theme of the 2026 edition, which will be the leitmotif of the entire Festival:

'From the market to the new powers. The hopes of young people'. A topic of pressing topicality, chosen by the event's Advisory Board, chaired by the Editor-in-Chief of Il Sole 24 Ore and Chairman of the Scientific Committee Fabio Tamburini and comprising Elena Beccalli, Marco Fortis, Paolo Magri, Emma Marcegaglia, Giulio Sapelli and Giulio Tremonti.

A title that compares, on the one hand, the scenarios of geopolitics that have seen the laws of the market and globalisation fade as a point of reference and give way to new centres of power such as Big Tech, which concentrate wealth and control the keys to artificial intelligence, and the autarchies of Russia and China, and, on the other, the hopes of young people faced with fears and uncertainties. Europe is in a particularly vulnerable position, caught between the pressure of Trump, the economic slowdown, a lack of leadership and an increasingly acute demographic crisis. The answer to these challenges lies in one priority: giving young people back their hope in the future, turning Italia and Europe into attractive places for new generations.

The Chairman of the Advisory Board and Scientific Committee of the Trento Festival of Economics Fabio Tamburini, Director of Sole 24 Ore, Radio 24 and Radiocor, explains: "The belief that the market is a perfect regulatory tool for international economic relations has collapsed. Today, the five Big Tech companies - Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon - have an economic weight equivalent to that of the 27 countries of the European Union, with the difference that in these countries there are democracies, albeit imperfect ones, while the five big tech companies, on the other hand, are led by five CEOs who hold the destinies of the world in their hands without being subject to any democratic control'.

In this paradigm and power shift, the collection and processing of data, which, thanks to artificial intelligence, is taking on extraordinary but also very dangerous potential, as well as the high energy requirements of AI technology companies to power their data centres, have a significant weight. And again the change in the world of work. "Issues on which there is a very high degree of unawareness. In contrast to the demographic issue, which is now on the agenda, but without the ability to find solutions,' adds Tamburini. 'If the axis of development has shifted towards Asia, where population and economic growth are concentrated, with India and China leading this phase and Africa in the race to play an increasingly relevant role, Europe and Italia are facing an irremediable decline, between demographic winter and the flight of talent.

These topics will be addressed in Trento with the contribution of leading representatives from the national and international academic scene (111), economists (35) and Nobel Prize winners (5), government ministers (16 confirmed to date), representatives of institutions (87) and the economic and financial business community (over 90) in an event that has taken on an even more international dimension, as witnessed by the many foreign media partners and the increase in speakers from abroad.

Five days that will bring more than 700 speakers to Trento in more than 300 events characterised by a single guiding principle: that of dialectics, reasoning and argumentation, of open and unprejudiced debate, giving space and voice to young people, who will be protagonists directly on stage.

Thanks to the "Voices of Tomorrow" initiative promoted by the Festival's Scientific Committee, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 will be able to propose themselves as speakers at the Festival: an extraordinary opportunity to take the floor and bring their own point of view to the centre of public debate in a Festival that, this year more than ever before, calls into question the very generation that is experiencing the great economic, social and geopolitical transformations at first hand. Applications are open until 8 April at ilsole24ore.com/vocideldomani.

There are also great expectations for the Fuori Festival, the programme schedule conceived four years ago by the II Sole 24 ORE Group to bring the economy and major current affairs topics closer to the broader and more transversal audience of young people and families through the involvement of popularisers and talent who speak the language of young people for young people. A winning bet, given the very high level of appreciation by audiences of all ages, which this year proposes an even richer programme of events, workshops and debates on the social economy, the world of work, scientific popularisation, health and wellbeing, and sustainability.

Two new features: the relocation of Radio 24 to Piazza Fiera with an innovative studio-truck for its live events, and the debut of Casa Sole, a new hub for meetings and dialogue with the public where they can get to know and meet all the realities of the Il Sole 24 ORE Group.

There is also a full programme of evening entertainment to suit all tastes: classical music concerts - with the return of Uto Ughi - and pop music with Arisa and Angelica Bove, and theatrical performances between irony and comedy with Elio and the artists of Zelig Lab. Not to be missed, finally, is the meeting-comparison between the presenters of Radio 24's La Zanzara, Giuseppe Cruciani and David Parenzo, with Fedez and Mr Marra.

Also returning are "Economies of the Territories", the series of events that gives voice to local enterprises and institutions in a format of in-depth analysis of territorial realities, the "Meetings with the Author" with book presentations, and the Festival Bookshop in Piazza Duomo curated by the Trentino Booksellers Association. The artistic and cultural attractions that, as always, the city of Trento will offer during the days of the Festival are also diverse and numerous. A mix of events designed to create an event capable of uniting the academic soul with the real economy, the economy of the territories with the global economy.

An event spread throughout the city of Trento, capable of intertwining the needs and opportunities of companies, institutions, young people and families, with a special focus on students from Trentino schools and students from the rest of Italia.

The 2026 Festival and Fuori Festival will be even more inclusive, thanks to the focus placed by the organisers, since the first 2022 edition, on gender equality, committing year after year to balance the gender presence within the speaker panels. This year, the female presence among speakers is around 31% while in 2022 it was 27%.

The FORMATS and FILMS OF THE FESTIVAL

The programme of the event includes numerous appointments, again this year characterised by different editorial formats: keynote speeches, dialogues and panels. The theme of the 2026 edition will be declined in 14 strands: geopolitics, artificial intelligence, energy, space economics, business economics, digital economics, economic policies, sustainability, demography, diversity and inclusion, medicine health and healthcare, current affairs, work and new professions, urban transformation.

PROTAGONISTS OF THE PROGRAMME

French economist Philippe Aghion will explain to the Trento audience "The Economic Theory of Creative Destruction", which has just won him the Nobel Prize for Economics 2025 (together with Joel Mokyr and Peter Howitt).

Arriving for the first time at the Trento Festival is Jan Račinsky, president of the human rights organisation Memorial International, which won the Nobel Peace Prize 2022.

Present will be the 2010 Nobel Laureate in Economics Christopher Pissarides, Regius Professor at the London School of Economics and co-founder of the Institute for the Future of Work, known for his contributions to the theory of market frictions in job search and supply (for which he was awarded by the Swedish academy together with the Americans Peter Diamond and Dale Mortensen); James Heckman, Nobel Prize in Economics 2000 (together with Daniel McFadden) for his contributions to the "development of theory and methods for the analysis of selective samples", who will speak on "The decline of fertility in Italia and the world"; Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize 2011 for her non-violent struggle for democracy and her defence of women's rights in Yemen, founder of the Tawakkol Karman International Foundation.

Among the strands of the 21st edition of the Festival dedicated to analysing the new international equilibriums, the protagonist will be geopolitics. On this front, the collaboration with ISPI-Istituto per gli studi di politica internazionale (Institute for International Political Studies) has been confirmed, which will propose five panels, including one on the hopes of young people in Europe with Paolo Gentiloni, president of the BEI global advisory board, and Romano Prodi, University of Bologna; and one on the hopes of young people for the UN with Staffan De Mistura, secretary-general personal envoy for the UN Western Sahara, Paolo Magri, president of the Ispi scientific committee. The other three panels will analyse China's great moment, the Middle East in flames, Trump's America towards the Midterm elections.

Still in the geopolitics vein, not to be missed is the 'War and Peace' dialogue between Ferruccio de Bortoli and Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli's executive vice-chairman, and the interview with Romano Prodi by the editor-in-chief of Il Sole 24 Ore Fabio Tamburini on the 'inclined plane' in which we find ourselves today and which would seem destined to take us to the brink of the third world war, as Pope Francis anticipated no less than 10 years ago. A trend that must be reversed by putting respect for international rules back in first place, as the panel 'Splendour and Death of International Law' with Ambassador Maurizio Massari and Giuseppe Nesi, a member of the UN Commission on International Law, and the speech by Father Enzo Fortunato, president of the Pontifical Committee for the World Children's Day, who will analyse 'The Age of Predators', will remind us. Then Giulio Tremonti, chairman of the Foreign and Community Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, will give a speech entitled "Whatever mistakes, causes and responsibilities of the next financial crisis".

The President of the United States and his management of international economic relations will be analysed from different points of view: Richard Robb, School of international and public affairs at Columbia University, will explain how American capitalism is changing, while Donato Masciandaro, Bocconi University, will analyse the connections between the euro and the dollar in the Trump era. Marco Fortis, vice-president of the Edison Foundation, and Giuliano Noci, pro-rector of the Milan Polytechnic, will talk about 'Trump the global picketer'.

In front of a strong US stands an increasingly struggling Europe: Marco Buti and Marcello Messori from the European University Institute; Miguel Ángel Fernandez-Palacios, Spanish Ambassador to Italia, and Gianfelice Rocca, President of the Techint Group, will analyse the role of Europe in the world disorder. Enrico Letta, IE University Madrid, will bring a reflection on 'One Europe, One Market', while Sergio Fabbrini, Luiss Guido Carli University, will speak on 'Europe in the Trenches'. Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, President of Italo, Fondazione Telethon and Manifatture Sigaro Toscano, will explain why we need a United States of Europe. Analysing instead the situation in Italia starting from numbers will be Lilia Cavallari, President of the Parliamentary Budget Office, and Francesco Maria Chelli, President of the National Institute of Statistics.

From China, Zhiyi He, dean global institute for the advancement of industry and technology, Nankai University, and Yang Yao, China Center for Economic Research, will talk with Giovanni Tria, University of Rome Tor Vergata. On the other hand, Yang Wang, vice president Hong Kong University, will talk about Beijing's resilience and how China is planning for the future, together with Kerry Brown, King's College London, Alicia Herrero, chief economist Asia Pacific at Natixis corporate and investment banking, and Ivan Cardillo, president of the Institute of Chinese Law. Meetings not to be missed will be the one with Bruna Szego, president of the European Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing Authority (AMLA), and the one with two professors from the Chinese Communist Party school, Xu Jie and Yang Zhen on "Multilateralism at the Trial by Fire".

On the 'new powers' front, no less than 13 panels will be dedicated to analysing the role of Artificial Intelligence: among them, Paolo Benanti, chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Committee at the Department for Information and Publishing of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and Sabino Cassese, Scuola normale superiore of Pisa, who will discuss 'Digital Empires, the Old and the New Globalisation'.

Intesa Sanpaolo Chairman Gian Maria Gros-Pietro will be interviewed by Maria Latella on the topic of artificial intelligence and new finance.

Paolo Savona, former chairman of Consob, will analyse generative artificial intelligence between efficiency and respect for human rights, while Vincenzo Carbone, director of the Agenzia delle Entrate, will explain the evolution of assessments between artificial intelligence and new relations with taxpayers. Also returning for the second year at the Festival of Economics will be the Chief of Police and Director General of Public Security Vittorio Pisani to take stock of security and artificial intelligence, and Salvatore Luongo, Commander General of the Carabinieri, to illustrate the weapon's investments in new generations between technology and tradition.

Among the strands to be analysed in order to understand where the world is going is certainly the evolution of work. The pro-rector of the Milan Polytechnic, Giuliano Noci, will present at the Festival dell'Economia, together with Inps president Gabriele Fava, the research promoted by the Milan Polytechnic and Cassa Padana on 4,000 young people 'Next Gen Power: young people driving the future (and without the need for rear-view mirrors)'.

Of course, there can be no shortage of reflections on the impact that AI will have on the world of work and the new professions it will generate, starting with the evolution of factory work with the arrival of humanoids, Giuliano Noci recounts in dialogue with Andrea Stroppa, Elon Musk's spokesman in Italia.

The coordinator of Base Italia Marco Bentivogli, entrepreneur Silvia Castagna, member of the Artificial Intelligence Commission for Information of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the president of the National Council of Labour Consultants Rosario De Luca, and the president of Alchimia Marina Salamon will discuss 'Work in the Pincer: Artificial Intelligence, Low Wages, Training to Improve'.

The vice-president of the Superior Council of the Magistracy Fabio Pinelli will introduce the panel 'Professions and justice at the test of artificial intelligence' in which Tatiana Biagioni, president of Avvocati Giuslavoristi Italiani; Vito Pace, president of the National Council of Notaries, will speak. Nicholas Eberstadt, American Enterprise Institute, Daniela Fumarola, CISL general secretary, and Maurizio Tarquini, Confindustria general director, will discuss the labour market, productivity, social spending and inactives, while Roberto Viola, European Commission DG Connect director general, and Gregorio De Felice, Intesa Sanpaolo chief economist and head of research, will discuss artificial intelligence, productivity and employment, among others. Franco Gallo, Luiss Guido Carli University will speak on 'Taxes, solidarity and subsidiarity'.

Connected to artificial intelligence is also the thread on energy, an increasingly strategic sector for Big Tech that needs to power the data centres that train the large language models of these new advanced technologies. "Artificial intelligence and data centres, where energy will come from" is the title of the panel in which Antonio Zoccoli, president of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, and Davide Tabarelli, president of Nomisma Energia, will discuss the subject. He will also speak at the meeting dedicated to Asia's thirst for energy together with Alessandro Lanza, director of the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei.

The big names in the energy sector will also be in Trento: among them, Paolo Scaroni, president of Enel, who together with Antonio D'Amato, president of Seda International Packaging Group, will analyse the future of the green deal.

Among the appointments not to be missed in the Urban Transformation strand, archistar Carlo Ratti, director Massachusetts Institute of technology, senseable city lab, will explain how Artificial Intelligence can improve cities, while the Mayors of Rome, Milan, Trento and Treviso - Roberto Gualtieri, Beppe Sala, Franco Ianeselli and Mario Conte - will discuss what it means to govern cities today.

Then the appointment with the analysis of the quality of life of children, young people and the elderly in the Italian provinces by the editorial staff of Il Sole 24 Ore returns.

After the great success of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, Olympic and Paralympic athletes arrive at the Festival of Economics for a reflection together with Giovanni Malagò, president of the Milan Cortina Foundation, on the transition from Olympic medals to the economy of life.

Once again this year, alongside the analyses of economists and academics from all over the world, the Il Sole 24 ORE Group is bringing the vision of entrepreneurs to encourage the comparison and exchange of ideas and experiences in the field between the academic world and the business world. ECONOMIES OF TERRITORIES

"Economies of the Territories" is the format that brings to the Festival a concrete look at the changes affecting communities, work, enterprise and institutions. A journey that focuses on the territory as the place where the great transitions of our time are measured: demography, housing, innovation, mobility, participation, sustainability and quality of life. In the various appointments, challenges and opportunities will emerge that closely concern the new generations, including access to work, attractiveness of local contexts, training and the transfer of skills. It will also be an opportunity to reflect on how local economies, research, manufacturing, services and public administration can generate development and cohesion. A mosaic of meetings that tells of the territory as a living space of innovation, responsibility and future. A schedule that grows with illustrious guests involved thanks to: Altroconsumo; Associazione Artigiani Trentino; CALRE - Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies; Provincial Commission for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men; Confindustria Trento; Confprofessioni Trentino; Council of the Autonomous Province of Trento; Federpreziosi; Fiavet Trentino Alto Adige; FIMAA Trento; FIPE - Federazione Italiana Pubblici Esercizi; Fondazione Caritro; Fondazione Demarchi; Fondazione Edmund Mach; Fondazione Negrelli; Gruppo Giovani Imprenditori terziario; Gruppo Giovani Imprenditori Confindustria Trento; IPRASE; New Humanity-Movimento dei Focolari; Servizio Lavoro della Provincia autonoma di Trento; Pensplan Centrum; Trentino Digitale.

MeETINGS WITH THE AUTHOR

One of the programme schedules most appreciated by the public is that of the Meetings with the Author, a privileged space for dialogue between books, ideas and current events that also in 2026 will host some of the most authoritative voices in journalism, economics and culture thanks to the renewed collaboration with many Italian publishers. Among the protagonists will be Claudio Cerasa and Mario Calabresi; Franco Gabrielli and Carlo Bonini; Giovanni Bazoli and Tommaso Arenare; Andrea Colamedici and Marianna Aprile; Mariangela Pira and Serena Mazzini; Massimo Scaglioni, Linus and Massimo Beduschi; Luca Mari; the Franco-Indian economist Navi Radjou; and the bookmaker Megi Bulla.

YEAR-ROUND ECONOMY FESTIVAL

One of the innovations introduced by the Il Sole 24 ORE Group in the formula of the historic Trento Festival of Economics was that of making the event live throughout the year, even outside the canonical days of the festival and in locations other than the Trentino area. Two initiatives have been organised: the fifth cycle of the international roadshow ROAD to TRENTO, organised in collaboration with the Italian Embassies around the world to take the Trento Festival of Economics abroad: in 2026 it will stop in Brazil and Vietnam, following the stages of the previous four years in Lugano, San Francisco, Abu Dhabi, Johannesburg, New Delhi, London, Berlin, New York and Paris.

There were four stops on the Festival presentation tour: at the Piccolo in Alessandria, the University of Perugia, the CUOA Business School in Vicenza (Altavilla Vicentina) and the Ceresio Bank in Lugano.

FESTIVAL WEBSITE AND HOW TO ACCESS EVENTS (festivaleconomia.it)

Packed with content and services for easy access to the festival's extensive programme, the festivaleconomia.it website is a reference point, also in English, for discovering the themes, guests and events that will animate the Festival.

Once again this year, in order to attend the events in theatres and keep up to date with the latest news during the five days of the festival, it will be enough to make a simple one-time registration on the Festival website, reserved to those over 18 years of age. Those who have already authenticated in 2025 can simply request the new QR Code updated for this year's edition. Registration will also provide a personal area in which you can organise your own days at the festival and enjoy live-streaming and on-demand talks. Registration is necessary, but does not guarantee a place at the events, which will be free of charge while places last.

FOR THE FOURTH YEAR A SUSTAINABLE AND ACCESSIBLE FESTIVAL

In the previous three years the Festival dell'Economia obtained certification of its sustainable event management system in accordance with UNI ISO 202121:2012. Trentino Marketing, with the full support of Il Sole 24 ORE Group, is committed to renewing the organisation's management system in accordance with the International Standard UNI ISO 20121:2024 also for 2026.

Water dispensers and ecological islands will be installed throughout the festival area. In addition, all festival venues will be equipped with a detailed technical data sheet, available on the official website, providing comprehensive information on accessibility for people with motor disabilities. In order to ensure an optimal reception, a dedicated email has been set up for all accessibility-related requests: inclusione@trentinomarketing.org. In addition, the festival will host the presence of the Mondo Doula Association, which will set up a reception area for families.

For the first time this year, some venues will offer the possibility of viewing the real-time transcript of speeches on the big screen, and more than 100 events streamed on the festival website will be accompanied by accessible transcripts, to facilitate the full participation of people with hearing disabilities in presence and online.

MEDIA PARTNER

Alongside the media presence of the Il Sole 24 ORE Group, joined this year by IlSole24OreTV, the Trento 2023 Festival of Economics confirms a framework of media partnerships of absolute prestige. Sky Tg 24 returns to Trento with a studio that will broadcast live from Piazza Duomo and an open-air media centre. Also renewing their partnership are the Financial Times, ElEconomista.es and the leading Dutch daily De Telegraaf, which this year will be joined by the Danish Politiken, the Japanese Yomiuri Shimbun and the Chinese Wenhui Daily, in addition to the LinkedIn News platform, testifying to the increasingly international interest aroused by the Trento Festival of Economics. Partnerships that reaffirm the quality of the Festival format conceived by the Il Sole 24 ORE Group and the international profile of the event.

MEDICAL COVERAGE OF THE IL SOLE 24 ORE GROUP

The Il Sole 24 ORE Group will once again deploy all its information production capacity to report on the days of the Festival by launching a series of special editions of the daily newspaper with dedicated back pages from Thursday to Tuesday that will delve into the main topics covered during the five days of the festival. There will be even greater involvement of journalists from Sole 24 Ore and Agenzia di Stampa Radiocor to ensure maximum coverage of the event in coordination with the multimedia editorial staff, which will feed the digital platforms, social channels and the new satellite television channel IlSole24OreTV.

Radio 24 will be even more of a protagonist by moving to its new location in Piazza Fiera, which this year will become the beating heart of all the activities of the Il Sole 24 ORE Group. This is where Radio 24's studio-stage will be located, in a completely new look, from which live broadcasts and programmes will be produced and the Group's live podcasts will take shape, as well as the presenters' LIVE shows. Also here, new in 2026, will be Casa

Sole, a new space designed as a hub for meeting and dialogue with the public.

The contents of the Festival of Economics will also become the contents of new Podcast series, produced by Il Sole 24 Ore and Radio 24, to listen to and explore some of the most significant speeches and topics. And in the meantime, the Podcast 'Le grandi voci del Festival dell'Economia' is available on 24orepodcast.com, on the websites of Il Sole 24 Ore, Radio 24 and on all the main audio platforms.
