The president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto (Forza Italia), is under investigation for corruption by the Catanzaro Public Prosecutor's Office. It was the president himself who revealed this in a video posted on social networks. 'I would never have thought,' Occhiuto says, 'that I would have to share such news with you. For the first time in my life I have received a notice of guarantee, they tell me as part of a wider investigation, which would involve several people. A notice for corruption. To me? That in these years I have managed the Region with absolute rigour, that I have never done anything remotely approaching a hypothesis of corruption'.
Occhiuto: investigate with rigour, I have done nothing wrong
"Usually people say 'I am serene, I trust the judiciary'. I'm serene my foot, I'm not serene,' Occhiuto continues, 'because being put on the register of suspects - even for my own protection, as I'm told - for me is an infamous thing: it's as if they had accused me of murder. It is a far-fetched thing for me to be even remotely close to a hypothesis of corruption'. "But I don't do like those who change their opinion when they go over to the other side," Occhiuto continued, "In recent years I have told magistrates and investigators that in a region like Calabria you have to investigate, investigate, always investigate to the end. Do the same thing: investigate, investigate with the utmost rigour, check everything, because I have done nothing wrong. And indeed, I have asked today to be interrogated by the magistrates, even in the dark, because I do not even know what circumstance is being contested against me. I asked to be heard as soon as possible because the way I have behaved over the years I have nothing to fear'.
Tajani: Occhiuto an honest person, certain of his innocence
The leader of Forza Italia and vice-premier Antonio Tajani immediately came to the governor's defence: 'I have known Roberto Occhiuto for many years. He is a good and honest person. I am certain of his innocence, I have no doubt that he has nothing to do with the disputed facts. I am convinced that the outcome of the investigation will bring him justice. Go Roberto!'.
