What is the flag of Austria doing on the tower of the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento? "It is not the flag of Austria," one of the castle custodians explains to me: "It is the flag of the province of Trento.

I insist. But the colours are the same as the flag of Austria! 'No, our flag has amaranth not red stripes.'

OK but the eagle is the same! "No, ours is the one of St Wenceslas: it's different from the Austrian one".

I give up, apologise to the millions of Italians who are aware of the difference and, to atone for the guilt, provide some background on the history of the 2 flags.

The flag of the Autonomous Province of Trento

.

The flag of the Autonomous Province of Trento is commonly used as a white flag with the provincial coat of arms in the centre, which depicts theEagle of St. Wenceslas..

Description: a black eagle, with red beak and talons, with golden paws and rostrum and enveloped in flames, on a shield with a white or silver background.

Origin: the eagle is called 'of St. Wenceslas' because it was granted as a heraldic symbol to the Episcopal Principality of Trent by Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg in 1339, in honour of St. Wenceslas of Bohemia, patron of the household. The eagle contains a shield.

Symbolism: represents imperial authority and the historical autonomy of the Trentino territory.

The official coat of arms of the Autonomous Province of Trento includes:

-) the shield with the eagle of St Wenceslas:
-) an oval crown or elaborate crest representing provincial autonomy.

The flag of Austria

.

The Austrian flag with the crowned eagle (smaller than that of the province of Trento, ndr) is the state flag of Austria (or 'Bundesdienstflagge').

Different from the simple Austrian national flag (which is red-white-red horizontal stripes without symbols) (the one at the end of the article, ndr)

The crowned black eagle holds:
1) a scythe (in its left paw);
2) a hammer (in its right paw);
3) broken chains in its paws.

Symbolism:

Crowned eagle: symbol of sovereignty and independence.

The hammer and sickle: they represent agricultural and industrial workers.

Broken chains: they symbolise liberation from oppression, particularly after the Second World War.

Wall crown on the eagle: represents the republic (replacing the imperial crown of the Austro-Hungarian Empire).

This flag is officially used by the Austrian government, ministries and embassies, and is not the flag commonly used among citizens (which is the plain red-white-red version).
