Prysmian: green light received to start work on the Italia-Tunisia electricity interconnector
Prysmian announces that it has received a notice to proceed from Terna, the operator of the Italian electricity grid, and from Steg, the Tunisian electricity and gas network operator, for the construction of the Elmed subsea power interconnector between Italia and Tunisia. The contract is worth approximately €460 million and will be included in Prysmian’s project backlog. “We are ready to turn this ambitious project into reality,” explains Raul Gil, Executive Vice President of Transmission at Prysmian. “By leveraging our Italian assets, including Arco Felice, our subsea cable manufacturing plant near Naples, our advanced asset monitoring system based in Palermo, and the Italian expertise of our installation teams – supported by our state-of-the-art subsea cable-laying vessels – we will bring the clean renewable energy generated in Tunisia into the Italian and European energy mix. This will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, whilst Tunisia will benefit significantly from direct access to the European electricity grid, gaining the stable connection needed to support the country’s economic growth.”
