An appointment of solidarity

.

"The Race for the Cure is a unique event, which after 25 years has become one of the most eagerly awaited and loved solidarity events by Romans. It is a truly rare mixture, capable of combining sport, health, prevention and solidarity in the best possible way, and thanks to the generosity of the many participants, it has made it possible to generate economic resources to launch important scientific research, training and breast cancer treatment projects throughout the country. Thanks to the strong testimony of the 'Women in Pink', the Race has also made it possible to generate an important cultural change in the way we face this disease, replacing fear and isolation with a positive spirit of sharing and closeness,' says Riccardo Masetti, founder of Komen Italia.

Early diagnosis is essential

.

"The diagnosis of breast cancer is nowadays more addressable, thanks to advances in research and technological innovations combined with the skills of doctors and healthcare personnel. For over 20 years, the Race for the Cure has been an important activity to promote prevention and raise funds, making it possible to detect the disease at an early stage, supporting research and thus improving the effectiveness of treatment," emphasises Daniele Piacentini, General Director of the Tiberina - Gemelli Isola Hospital.

Health Education and Prevention Projects

.

"Also this year we are proud to be able to help 45 associations all over the country to better put into play virtuous ideas for the realisation of projects of health education, prevention and support to women living the experience of the disease. With this investment, Komen Italia continues its long-standing commitment to developing virtuous synergies with other realities committed to the protection of women's health to help reduce the inequalities unfortunately still present today in access to care and treatment with high quality standards," says Daniela Terribile, President of Komen Italia.

31 million invested in research and prevention projects

Thanks to the Race for the Cure, Komen Italia has been able to invest over 31 million euros in research, prevention and support projects for women experiencing breast cancer. Starting from the awarding of 302 study prizes to young doctors for research projects or clinical training at centres of excellence in Italy and abroad. From holding 1,700 Women's Health Promotion Days to offering free instrumental examinations for the early diagnosis of breast and gynaecological cancers to 270,000 women in 17 Italian regions with the high-tech mobile units of the Caravan of Prevention. Almost EUR 5 million in economic contributions were paid out to 309 associations (Grants) for health promotion projects throughout Italy. And more than 1,900 free training sessions were held in 345 Italian cities for 82,000 participants including general practitioners, nurses, midwives, surgeons, anatomic pathologists, psycho-oncologists, gynaecologists, radiologists and radiology technicians, student pharmacists and women's associations. Two 'Komen Italia Centres for Integrated Therapies in Oncology' (at the Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli Irccs in Rome and at the Bellaria Hospital in Bologna) and 75 multi-year projects have been set up to offer free complementary therapies to more than 55,000 women with breast cancer, which are useful in promoting psychophysical wellbeing during and after cancer treatment, limiting the side effects of traditional therapies and reducing the danger of relapse of the disease. The commitment and experience gained by Komen Italia in this field has paved the way for the creation of a University Centre for Research and Training on Integrated Therapies in Breast Neoplasms (Ceritin) in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
