The European Commission accelerates the Russian gas stop and launches its three-step clampdown to end imports by the end of 2027: from 1 January 2026 it will be forbidden to sign new contracts, short-term agreements already in place will have to end by 17 June 2026, and long-term ones by 31 December 2027. There is also an exemption for countries without access to the sea - such as Hungary and Slovakia - which will be able to continue to import Russian gas until the end of 2027.

A night attack led by Russia hit Kiev hard. An air offensive combined with ballistic missile and drone strikes devastated several districts of the Ukrainian capital. The Ukrainian government said 10 people were killed in the raid, revising downwards an earlier tally that counted more casualties. "Twelve people died as a result of the Russian attacks in Ukraine: 10 were in Kiev and two others were pulled from the rubble in Odessa," Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said. "During search operations, parts of bodies initially registered as single dead may be found," he added, explaining the reason for the correction. "There are still people under the rubble, the work will not stop until they are found."

According to the mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attack affected several areas of the city. Only in the Solomianskyi district there were eleven injured, six of whom were hospitalised, while another nine people were injured in the Sviatoshynskyi district. The intervention of rescue teams saved lives and transported more than 40 injured people to hospital, butit is feared that the number of casualties could rise, as in some areas people are still digging through the rubble.

"It was another difficult night for Kiev", said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital's military administration, in a message posted on Telegram. "Another attack, more injured, houses destroyed, pain and anxiety. The search for people under the rubble continues. Rescuers, medics, police and volunteers are working in a coordinated way to save lives." In particular, in the Solomianskyi district, the entire entrance of a residential building collapsed, making rescue operations particularly complex.

Klitschko confirmed that emergency headquarters have been activated in both Solomianskyi and Darnytskyi to assist affected residents, offering medical and logistical support. Emergency services are still working to secure damaged areas, remove debris and provide assistance to evacuated families.

Meanwhile, the US president, Donald Trump, expressed scepticism about the effectiveness and costs of sanctions against Russia, stating that they are 'not a one-way street' and that they 'can cost the US billions and billions of dollars'.

In stark contrast, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared his intention to strengthen economic pressure on Moscow. 'We are finalising a further package of sanctions,' he said, 'and I want to work with all our G7 partners to squeeze Russia's energy revenues and reduce the funds they can devote to their illegal war'.

Canadian Prime Minister Marc Carney also announced new sanctions on Russia to put maximum pressure on Moscow. The announcement was made in the bilateral with Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7. The Canadian premier also brought the Ukrainian president a dowry of two billion dollars in military support.
