Lakefront promenade named after Ramelli; ANPI set to hold a rally in Verbania

The Verbania branch of ANPI is set to organise a demonstration in early September to protest against the decision by the council, led by Mayor Giandomenico Albertella, to name part of the Intra lakeside promenade after Sergio Ramelli. The decision was announced following last night’s public meeting at the Casa del Popolo in Trobaso, which was attended by around 150 people and representatives of the town’s opposition political parties.

“Citizens and representatives of various organisations have expressed dismay at the council’s decision, which seems incomprehensible given the existing dedication to the Italian Sailors’ Association and is deeply contradictory and divisive,” emphasises the ANPI. The association states that it has informed the ‘Marinai d’Italia’ Association “so that it may give its assessment of the matter” and that it has contacted the Verbania Prefecture, highlighting “the public order issues that could arise as a result of the naming, given the reprehensible gatherings of neo-fascist sympathisers linked to the name of the late Ramelli, who, like so many other young people, fell victim to the climate of violent degeneration in political conflict during the 1970s”.
