The Codacons emphasises that Italian motorists have been hit with a cost burden of more than EUR 2 billion, caused by the slow but inexorable increase in third-party motor liability rates from the second half of 2022. On the subject, the consumers' association published a report comparing Ivass provincial data, from which it emerges that some cities are more penalised than others in terms of rising insurance rates.
In Italy, the average price of a third-party motor liability policy has risen from 353 euro in January 2022 to 414 euro in September 2024, with an overall increase of +17.3% and an additional expense of 61 euro per insurance policy," the association emphasises. If we analyse the trend in the individual provinces, however, we find that in the period considered as many as 12 cities have recorded an average increase in rates of over 20%.
The record is held by Rome, where the cost of the policy has risen from EUR 379.7 at the beginning of 2022 to the current EUR 483, an increase of 27.2% and a higher average cost of as much as EUR +103 per policyholder. Among the most penalised cities are Cagliari, where rates have risen by 22.5% (almost EUR +79 per policy), Pordenone (+21.5%), Massa-Carrara and Caltanissetta (+21.3%).
Only four cities in the period under consideration recorded average increases of less than 10%: the most virtuous provinces are those of Calabria, with Reggio Calabria seeing policies rise on average by only 4.4% (+17.4 euro per insured), followed by Cosenza (+7.9%, +24.7 euro) and Catanzaro (+8.6%, +28.7 euro).
Prato tops the list of price rises.
