Real Madrid returns to the top of European football clubs by enterprise value after one year. The ranking is compiled by Football Benchmark, in its ninth annual report 'The European Elite 2024', which considers the 32 biggest clubs.

Real Madrid has an enterprise value (enterprise value) of 5 billion 97 million euros as of 1 January 2024, +27% compared to the previous year. The figures are those of the financial statements as at 30 June 2023, not including the season ending 30 June.

Madrid is the first club to exceed 5 billion in value. In second place is Manchester City, which a year ago broke the Galacticos' domination, which had lasted four years in a row, with a value of 4.93 billion (+21%).

Real Madrid's increase in value in 12 months is one billion and 96 million. Practically - according to Football Benchmark - it is as if in one year the club led by Florentino Pérez had added to its value that of a team like West Ham (one billion and 83 million) or a little more than Napoli (906 million).

Third is Manchester United, as in 2023, with a value increased by 24% to 4.861 billion. Advancing to fourth place is Bayern Munich, with a value of 4.25 billion (+11%) and a surplus for the 31st consecutive year. The Bavarians overtake Liverpool, worth 4.189 billion (+7%), in fifth place.

The impact of revenues

.

The study, edited by a group led by Andrea Sartori, founder and CEO, states that Real Madrid's robust increase in value 'is largely driven by a 16% increase in operating revenues, which have risen to 830 million', a record among European clubs. City has a slightly lower turnover, 826 million.

The report notes that 'this year's improvement is also linked to better profitability: personnel costs were reduced by 13% compared to the previous season and operating profit before extraordinary income improved by more than 270 million'.

Increase scissor

.

The 32 largest clubs have an aggregate value of 59.07 billion (+15.4%). The distance between the largest and the others increases. The top ten all have an enterprise value of more than 3 billion, while there were six a year ago. Between the tenth and eleventh, namely Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, there is a gap of 1.115 billion.

Dortmund, a Champions League finalist against Real Madrid, is crushed in economic data by the Galacticos: the Spanish club's value is 2.7 times that of the Germans.

The Italians

.

The study confirms the crisis of Juventus and an increase in the gap between the Italian teams and the top ten. Juventus remains the first among the seven Italian teams in the ranking, it is 12th as in 2023, but has lost 5% of its value: it is worth 1.702 billion, 92 million less than in 2023. The contraction is due to the elimination from the Champions League at the group stage last year, which caused limited growth in operating revenues. Profitability remains negative and the value of the squad has depleted.

Two places behind is AC Milan, with 1.436 billion in value: for the third year in a row, the Rossoneri have the highest value growth among the 32 teams, +35.5%, surpassing Arsenal who grew by 35.1% and are tenth.

Among the Italians, Inter, 15th with 1.424 billion (+13%), Napoli 17th with 906 million (+28%), As Roma 23rd with 604 million (+9%) precedes Ss Lazio, 29th with 445 million (+4%).

There is a sharp drop in the value of Atalanta, 28th with 467 million (-19%), the highest loss. According to Football Benchmark, the non-participation in the European cups in 2022-2023 is the main reason. Operating revenues decreased by 22%, profitability deteriorated.

However, winning the Europa League this year and returning to the Champions League will most likely reverse this trend in next year's report.
