Two timeframes with two different discounts. This is how the Government has outlined the next twenty days of reductions in diesel excise duty, as set out in a framework approved by the Council of Ministers at Palazzo Chigi.
Discount until 5 October
Let’s take it one step at a time. The discount currently in force – 17.1 cents per litre on diesel – will expire at midnight on 17 September. From the following day, Friday, a new discount will come into effect, reduced to 12.2 cents per litre (including VAT), which will last for one week. After that, from 26 September (inclusive) onwards, the discount will be halved to 6.1 cents per litre. This will last until 5 October.
After 5 October
What will happen in early October, given the tensions in Iran, remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said that the system of variable excise duties will be reassessed, using the additional VAT revenue from September.
