Renault: Google’s Gemini AI comes on board with OpenR Link systems
Artificial intelligence is being introduced across the French group’s range with new apps and Google Maps features that are also useful for electric vehicles. Gemini replaces Google Assistant in the OpenR Link series’ infotainment systems with integrated Google
Key points
Google’s Gemini AI on OpenR Link is now available on all models in the European range, from the Twingo to the Rafale, and on international models such as the Boreal and Dacia in India. Available from 15 June in all countries where Renault operates, this update – which is completely free of charge – does not affect the duration of the connectivity offer and enables remote procedures via Renault vehicles’ connectivity in over-the-air mode, without the need to visit a service centre. The system, which updates automatically, also adds new apps such as HBO Max, Amazon Music, Waze, SongPop for Renault and Canal+, as well as features for electric vehicles.
The upgrade is offered at no extra cost
The new feature, which allows users to choose whether or not to activate Gemini, is being rolled out gradually across the entire compatible vehicle fleet, depending on the thirteen languages now available and the version of OpenR Link being used. The system upgrade is offered at no extra cost, provided the vehicle is linked to a Google account and uses a language compatible with the new system. It is therefore up to the user to decide whether to accept or decline the activation of Gemini AI. In any case, Renault guarantees that users can revert to the current Google Assistant at any time and for any reason.
Google’s artificial intelligence handles more functions
Gemini is a step ahead of traditional voice assistants. Powered by Google’s artificial intelligence, it understands conversational context and users’ intentions, handles complex requests and engages in spontaneous, continuous conversations. This allows the driver to speak naturally without having to memorise specific phrases. You can also activate the advanced conversational mode, Gemini Live, to enhance interaction. In future, it will also allow you to interrupt the assistant at any time, make multiple requests without having to repeat ‘Hey Google’, and switch languages whilst the conversation is in progress.
Specific solutions for driving electric cars too
Unlike the version available via Android Auto, Gemini integrated with openR Link allows you to control functions such as climate control, navigation and the radio, and to access vehicle data – such as the range of electric vehicles – when planning your journeys.
It enables complex actions via voice commands and, by reducing the need for touch interactions, minimises driver distraction, ensuring the driver keeps their eyes on the road. Thanks, too, to advanced integration and the Google ecosystem, Gemini also responds to real-life situations. As a result, it can carry out various actions without the need for further interaction.
