I militari di Italia, Francia e Spagna sono pronti a presidiare nuovamente il valico di Rafah, a sud della Striscia di Gaza, e a vigilare sul transito sicuro di persone e carichi in entrata e in uscita da Gaza. Tornato operativo lo snodo logistico al confine tra l’Egitto e la Striscia, è infatti ripartita Eubam, European Union Border Assistance Mission, ovvero la missione dell’Unione europea di assistenza alla gestione integrata delle frontiere. E torna sul campo il contingente italiano, composto da carabinieri. Il primo impegno diretto dell’Italia nel dopoguerra di Gaza è quindi cominciato mentre si valuta per il futuro l’invio di circa duecento carabinieri nella Striscia per addestrare le forze locali palestinesi ed è ancora in gioco la possibile presenza di uomini del genio militare dell’Esercito per rimuovere mine terrestri e ordigni bellici.

Then there is the idea of assessing the feasibility of a plan to set up field hospitals in the south of Gaza, a solution already assessed some time ago and shelved due to the lack of clean water.
Intanto riprende Eubam, riassegnata a Rafah nel gennaio scorso (la prima missione invece partì nel 2005) a seguito del primo cessate il fuoco tra Israele e Hamas, che consentì una riapertura limitata del valico. Il movimento dei passeggeri attraverso il confine era cominciato a febbraio ed è proseguito fino allo scorso 17 marzo: in questo mese e mezzo la missione ha facilitato il transito sicuro di 4.176 persone, tra cui 1.683 pazienti e i loro accompagnatori, in stretta collaborazione con l’Autorità generale palestinese per le frontiere e i valichi. Le operazioni sono state sospese il 18 marzo a seguito della ripresa del conflitto e con la conseguente chiusura del valico. Da allora le squadre specializzate sono rimaste dispiegate sul territorio, facendo base ad Ashkelon, continuando a supportare le iniziative di rafforzamento di quella zona affinché si potesse poi gestire efficaceme
Force in the field at the moment
IWhile waiting for the mission to be reinforced, at the moment there remains the core of twenty men made up of specialised teams from the Carabinieri (so far there are eight soldiers), the French gendarmerie and the Spanish Guardia Civil, which together represent a European gendarmerie force. From the very beginning their task has been to monitor security, but no checks on people and things - at least at the moment - are directly entrusted to the Eubam units. It cannot be excluded that in the coming days there may be a request for more soldiers - perhaps dozens - to support the team.

The same mission will be extended to the Strip as soon as conditions are right. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto himself has repeatedly stressed in recent days that Italy is "already operating in that area and we will continue to do so because we have a duty to do everything possible so that the war that is now ceasing does not resume".
