In Milan, music under the stars, at the twelfth edition of Concerto per Milano, with the Filarmonica della Scala conducted by Riccardo Chailly against the backdrop of Piazza Duomo. The summer festivals begin, with the opening of Glyndebourne and its legendary picnics in the long interval; and with the Whitsun Festival in Salzburg, where artistic director Cecilia Bartoli presents Mozart's 'La Clemenza di Tito' directed by Robert Carsen and herself in the role of Sesto.
Milan
On 9 June in Piazza Duomo the twelfth edition of the Concert for Milan by the Filarmonica della Scala, with its principal conductor Riccardo Chailly and violinist Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. It is the mutual attraction between symphonic music and great cinema that leads the evening's programme. Tjeknavorian is the soloist for the suite from the ballet 'Le boeuf sur le toit' by Darius Milhaud, 'Cinematic Fantasy on South American Motifs' in the subtitle and which Milhaud would have wanted as the soundtrack to a Charlie Chaplin film. Then the pages of John Williams, with the famous violin theme from 'Schindler's List', 'E.T.' and 'Indiana Jones'. Nino Rota's suite from Luchino Visconti's 'Leopard' will be performed. .From 16 May to 25 August is the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, which has been presenting performances in this unique setting in the English meadows since 1934. Carmen' opens, with Aigul Akhmetshina in the title role, who had recent success at Covent Garden in the same character; Robin Ticciati conducts, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (as usual).
Salzburg
On 17 and 19 the Whitsun Festival, with Mozart's 'La Clemenza di Tito'; with Cecilia Bartoli, directed by Gianluca Capuano with Les Musiciens du Prince, directed by Robert Carsen. The performance can also be seen at the Summer Festival, which opens on 19 July.
