The number of road fatalities among cyclists is rising. From the beginning of the year to 24 August, 152 cyclists died as a result of an accident. And August saw the highest negative record in eight years with 27 deaths. Providing the data for this sad count is the Asaps-Sapidata Cyclist Observatory, the association of friends of the Traffic Police, based in Forlì, which periodically updates the list of road victims and, at the same time, provides advice and suggestions to pedestrians and cyclists.
Negative record for August
'In the real-time observatory,' writes the association, 'there were 152 deaths as of 24 August among cyclists. Since the beginning of the year, 137 men and 15 women have died'. The majority of those killed are over 60 years old. Specifically, the over-65s 'reach 72 since the beginning of the year, almost half of the total number of deaths'. "It should be noted that out of 152 deaths, 15 were caused by hit-and-run drivers, who fled after killing cyclists, the last one at Spinazzola in Apulia," the association further emphasises. Twelve deaths in January and fifteen in February 2025. Fourteen deaths occurred in March, and nineteen in April. As many as twenty-five in May, a negative record in recent years. Twenty-one those occurred in June. Nineteen those counted in July'.
That's not all: 'Twenty-seven have already occurred in August, a record for the last eight years.
