Highway Code, adjustment of penalties to inflation postponed
Milleproroghe saves motorists from heavier penalties until December 2026
Undisciplined motorists will be saved by the Milleproroghe. Once again. Among the postponements included in the government decree, which is expected in the Council of Ministers on Thursday 11 December, is the suspension of the two-yearly update of penalties under the Highway Code, which is extended by one year to 1 December 2026.
Increases with the new Highway Code
A sigh of relief for consumer associations and those who drive, since the update to inflation would have been a 'slap in the face' to be added to the sharp tightening of administrative penalties, in force for a year now, with the new Road Code.
The new Highway Code has particularly affected the punishment system, such as the fine for anyone exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h and by no more than 40 km/h, which is raised to between 220 and 880 euro, if the violation is committed within a built-up area and at least twice within a year. The fine is increased to between 220 and 880 euro, if the violation is committed within a built-up area and at least twice within a year
How the inflation adjustment works
Without the postponement of the inflation adjustment of the fines, the increase in prices in 2021-2022 would have had to be taken into account, which, due to inflation in that period, had led to a change in the Foi index, (national consumer price index for blue- and white-collar households published by ISTAT), in the period between December 2020 and November 2022, of +15.6%
