Key points
The Rome Local Police arrested a 22-year-old man in the act following a car chase on Via Collatina. The young man is accused of aggravated theft in conjunction with others and possession of burglary tools. A 17-year-old was with him in the car and has been referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Juvenile Court in Rome on the same charges. Around 40 kilograms of copper pipes were found in the vehicle, the proceeds of a theft committed shortly before at a local business.
Attempted escape on foot
A patrol from the SPE (Emergency Public Safety) Unit spotted a Ford Galaxy travelling at high speed. The car repeatedly veered into the opposite lane to overtake a queue of vehicles, even on bends with poor visibility. The officers ordered the driver to stop on several occasions. The car came to a halt at the roundabout between Via Collatina and Via di Salone, where the two occupants attempted to flee on foot. They were apprehended with the assistance of other patrols.
In the car
Inside the vehicle were a jack, pliers, large screwdrivers and shears. The copper pipes were hidden under a blanket.
The 22-year-old was also charged with traffic offences committed during his escape and with repeated driving without a licence. The arrest was authorised by the judicial authorities. The copper was returned to its owner.
