The Final of the Internazionali di Roma between Atp number one, Jannik Sinner, and number two, Carlos Alcaraz, crowned the Spaniard and postponed yet again the return to victory of an Italian tennis player at the Foro Italico.

He won 7-6, 6-1 in just over an hour and a half Alcaraz, on a great day and much more precise than in the previous rounds. Second 1o00 title after Montecarlo on clay this season and perfect viaticum for Roland Garros in a fortnight' time.

Sinner gave way after 26 consecutive matches won and lost as in Beijing last time against his Iberian rival. Two-sided match.

First set of great balance, with both tennis players nervous about the stakes, in which there were more errors than winners. In fact, in an hour and ten minutes Alcaraz only prevailed in the tie break 7-5. Decisive to break the tie was a tape that put Sinner in trouble, who missed the veronica on the Spaniard's lob. Alcaraz, who was then able to score two aces, took advantage of this to bring the partial to his side.

During the set there were two set points each with Sinner who at 6-5 in reply failed to take advantage of 15-40 in his favour. While Alcaraz immediately went 3-0 up in the tie break and despite a double fault proved more cynical and won the first partial with the only real drop at the net.

The pace changed in the second set with the first game at bat going to Alcaraz. Sinner committed his third double fault in the opening of his first service game and lost it to 0, leaving the first break to the Spaniard. Alcaraz overcame the difficult moment of 15-40 in the first set, practically racking up a lot of winning strokes, beginning to dominate the exchanges, with recoveries and strokes decidedly more powerful and effective than the Italian. Alcaraz quickly took a 4-0 lead, breaking Sinner for the second time, who all of a sudden seemed to be suffering from the fatigues of returning after his three-month disqualification. The more Alcaraz's self-confidence grew, with short balls and crazy defences, the more Sinner seemed drained of energy, especially mentally.

Despite the cheering of the Central Jannik Sinner was unable to react. He led 1-5, but eventually ceded the sceptre of Rome to Alcaraz.

Today's match between Sinner and Alcaraz was the th final, the second on clay after Umag in 2022. Sinner, who was then world no. 10, won 6-7 (5) 6-1 6-1 over his Spanish rival, who was then world no. 5. That remains Jannik's only title won on clay at the moment, while Alcaraz has won nine, including Roland Garros 2024, the Madrid Masters 1000 twice and the Monetcarlo Masters 1000 once. A playing surface that is certainly more favourable to him than, for example, the concrete of Melbourne and the Us Open.

Adriano Panatta remains the last Italian to have won the Internationals in 1976, beating Argentina's Guillermo Vilas in the final in four sets: 2-6 7-6 6-2 7-6. In the same year, Panatta also won the Paris Slam at Roland Garros. A double that Alcaraz hopes to replicate.
