Port of Rome sets record for cruise passengers

Historic result for cruise traffic in the port of Civitavecchia. With more than 3.55 million passengers transited in 2025, an increase of 2.81% compared to the previous year, the Rome port of call is confirmed as Italy's leading cruise port. The results achieved by the Lazio port were illustrated by the president of the Port Authority, Raffaele Latrofa, and the general manager of the Roma cruise terminal, John Portelli. The figure achieved, they emphasised, 'represents a new record for the Italian port system, since the port of call has surpassed, for the first time, the threshold of 3.5 million cruise passengers and archived its previous record, from last year. This consolidates Civitavecchia's strategic role in the world cruise scene, both as a port of transit and, above all, as a port of embarkation and disembarkation (homeport)".

In fact, the positive trend in passenger traffic (those in transit grew by 5.4%, to 1.82 million, while those embarked and disembarked rose by 1%, to 1.72 million) is accompanied by a growth in the number of stopovers (up to 862, an increase of 2.5%, compared to 841 in 2024). There was, they explained, a 'strengthening of the entire cruise supply chain, involving port operators, shipping companies, technical and logistics services'.

For 2026, Latrofa continued, "we expect further very important results, also taking into account that the completion of the works of the NCP (the national plan complementary to the RNRP, ed.) - from the opening of the southern access to the port, to the new connection with the antemurale and its extension - will radically change the face of the port and the functionality of services and mobility linked to cruises. For which, moreover, solutions are being studied that will make it possible to continue supporting their growth, increasing the port's capacity to satisfy all the berthing requests of the various companies, starting from 2027-28".
