Ukraine, tomorrow afternoon in Munich meeting between Rubio and Zelensky
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Volodymyr Zelensky will meet tomorrow, Saturday, at 5pm. This was reported by the US portal Newsmax, citing a Ukrainian official.
Earlier, the Financial Times had reported that Rubio allegedly invoked agenda problems in order not to attend a meeting with his European counterparts to discuss the conflict in Ukraine on the sidelines of the Munich Security Summit.
According to the newspaper, Rubio's absence was interpreted by European diplomats as a sign of Washington's growing disinterest in involving them in the peace process.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said that the next rounds of negotiations between the US, Russia and Ukraine will be held on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 February in Geneva.

Macron: 'Europe to be taken as an example and not criticised'
Europe should be taken as an 'example' and not 'criticised' or 'caricatured'. Thus French President Emmanuel Macron speaking at the Munich Security Conference a year after US Vice-President JD Vance launched a harsh attack against the Old Continent from the same stage. "Europe has been vilified as an ageing, slow and fragmented construct, relegated by history. As an overregulated and apathetic economy that shies away from innovation. As a society plagued by barbarian migrations that corrupt its precious traditions. And, even more curiously, in some quarters as a repressive continent where speech is not free and where alternative facts cannot claim the same right of citizenship as truth itself - this concept is obsolete and cumbersome,' said the French president.

"We have reaffirmed our readiness to provide solid security guarantees after the end of the fighting, with the US playing a crucial supporting and monitoring role", while "the European, US and Ukrainian partners have prepared a common framework for prosperity, anchored in reforms, EU integration and mobilisation of public and private capital", she added. "In addition, Europe is stepping up its direct support. We are finalising our EUR 90 billion loan to keep the state running while strengthening air defence systems and enhancing defence capabilities. We are also increasing the cost of war for Russia through our 20th sanctions package. Our goal is clear: to ensure that Ukraine can negotiate peace on its own terms, from a position of strength and with a secure and prosperous future for its citizens within the EU,' he concludes.

The California governor added that "we are demonstrating on a large scale that we can implement, we can compete and we can dominate, but Donald Trump is trying to turn back the clock." "I hope Donald Trump is temporary. He will be gone in three years," he added, arguing that the climate crisis is directly affecting Americans, as "people are burning, choking, overheating; we have simultaneous droughts and floods, forest fires of historic proportions." German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is not counting on an alternative to NATO's current nuclear deterrence. The SPD politician warned against duplication of structures and efforts, 'which ultimately do not lead to duplicate results', which is why 'I am rather cautious about this'. The defence minister also stated that he considered this 'a debate that we do not necessarily need right now'. Pistorius also referred to the international treaties to which Germany is bound, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. In addition, Germany has committed in the Two Plus Four Agreement not to possess nuclear weapons of its own.'This means that taking this step would be a violation of these treaties,' he added.

Merz: 'End of war unlikely if Russia not economically and militarily exhausted'
Moscow is unlikely to end its war against Ukraine until it is 'economically and militarily exhausted'. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said this while speaking at the Security Conference in Munich. Kiev's Western allies must 'do whatever it takes' to bring Russia to a point where it will no longer see any advantage in continuing 'this terrible war'. Kallas: 'Board of Peace does not reflect UN resolution'
"Yes, it is true that the UN Security Council resolution provided for a Board of Peace for Gaza, but it also provided for it to be limited in time until 2027, it provided for the Palestinians to have a say, and it referred to Gaza, whereas the statute of the Board of Peace makes no reference to any of these things". "We will try to see if we can find a solution. But I don't think that" the crisis with the US over Greenland "is over". Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Financial Times on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, where she will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. After the high tension at the beginning of January, "we now have a more traditional political diplomatic path to follow," explained the Danish leader, reiterating however that the Copenhagen 'red lines' on sovereignty are non-negotiable. "Europe must have an emergency mentality," she added. "I will never suggest anything that separates us from the United States. But if it is the US that does something that divides us, even partially, then my strongest advice is to bridge' this gap, he stressed, urging Europeans to act in the face of the evidence that 'the old world is not coming back'. Frederiksen then praised the united response to Donald Trump's pressure. The newfound unity 'tells us that the basic principles of a global society - respect for sovereign states, territorial integrity - are values on which the majority of the world's population will not compromise,' she stressed. The premier then defended the decision to deploy a small contingent of allied troops to Greenland, rejecting accusations of provocation from Washington: 'We were totally transparent with the Americans, they knew exactly what was going on and why'.

Kallas: 'UN does not reflect world as it is at present'
"You know, what is the opposite of the word 'order', of a world based on rules? It is tyranny and wars. And that is clearly where we are now," said Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission, during the panel The International Order between Reform and Destruction at the Munich Security Conference, stating that today "the United Nations does not reflect the world as it is today".
"Whenever we have faced major international crises, we have also seen a development in international law. The League of Nations did not have the instruments that the United Nations had, and now we have to look to the future," Kallas noted.

Defence: Merz launches 'freedom programme' in four pillars
"It will not be enough to react to the manoeuvres of the great powers: we have to define our own agenda". This was said by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz speaking at the Munich Security Conference, outlining a four-pillar 'freedom agenda' to tackle the new geopolitical phase. The first pillar is to strengthen Germany and Europe 'militarily, politically, economically and technologically', so as to 'reduce dependencies and vulnerabilities', including by supporting Ukraine 'in its courageous stand against Russian imperialism'. The second pillar is a stronger and sovereign Europe: 'A sovereign Europe is our best response to the new era,' he said, calling for a focus on freedom, security and competitiveness. The third element is the transatlantic partnership. "A gap has opened between Europe and the United States," he acknowledged, but "together we are stronger" and cooperation remains indispensable, because "even the United States will not be strong enough if it acts alone". Finally, the fourth pillar, a global network of partners: 'Europe and the transatlantic relationship remain central, but they are no longer enough on their own'. For Merz, new strategic partnerships with countries in different regions such as Canada, Japan, India and Brazil are needed to 'reduce risks, open up opportunities and protect our freedom'.

Since the beginning of the conflict triggered by the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine almost four years ago, China has always claimed a neutral stance but is accused of providing support to Vladimir Putin's Russia in various ways.

Merz: the war in Ukraine will end when Russia is exhausted
"In my personal assessment, this war will only end when Russia is at least economically and potentially militarily exhausted. We are approaching that moment, but we are not there yet,' German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said about the war in Ukraine during the interview following his speech at the Munich Conference.
"I said in my speech that we have done a lot to achieve this goal, but we are not there yet. Russia must give up this terrible war against Ukraine. And we must do everything necessary to bring it to the point where it no longer sees any advantage in continuing this terrible war," Merz continued.
"We are not there yet, but look: this war now lasts longer than the Second World War. It is terrible. Russia has it in its hands to stop it. But we also have in our hands, together with the US, Europe and Ukraine, the chance to take it to that point and stop it,' Merz added

Merz: Vance is right, there is a gap between the EU and US

The cultural struggle of the MAGA movement is not ours'. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said this in Munich. 'Freedom of speech with us ends when it goes against human dignity and the constitution. We do not believe in tariffs and protectionism, but in free trade. We remain loyal to climate agreements and the WHO because we are convinced that only together can we solve global challenges'.

Merz, the post-war order no longer exists
"We need to talk, it is more urgent than ever". German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said this when opening the Munich Security Conference. "For several years now there has also been a mood here in the hall marked by rising tensions and conflicts in the world". Merz also quoted the motto of the conference: 'Under destruction', referring to the post-war world security order. "I am afraid we have to say it in even clearer terms: this order, however imperfect it was even in its best moments, no longer exists.
"Russia's gross domestic product amounts to about two trillion euros. That of the European Union is almost ten times higher. Yet Europe today is not ten times stronger than Russia," Merz said. 'Our military, political, economic and technological potential is enormous. But for a long time we have not exploited it to the necessary extent."

Hundreds in Munich square for Iran: 'No to the Shah and the mullahs'
Not far from the main venue of the Munich Security Conference, a demonstration calling for regime change in Iran took to the streets. Several hundred people, wearing yellow hats and waistcoats, shouted 'No Shah, no mullah': if in fact on the one hand they are protesting against the ayatollahs' regime, on the other hand they are not happy about the involvement of Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Persia's son in exile in the USA.
"The Iranian people reject all forms of dictatorship, whether it is the Shah or the Supreme Leader. The presence of the deposed Iranian dictator's son at the Munich Security Conference leaves a shameful stain on the conference," said a speaker from the main stage quoted by the Guardian, stressing that his participation reminds Iranians of the 1953 coup "that inflicted immeasurable pain and suffering on our people". "Our message today is . clear, simple and unwavering: change will come from within Iran, not from foreign intervention," she said.

Von der Leyen: with strong European defence also stronger NATO
"For years we have heard, both within the Alliance and elsewhere, that Europe must do more for defence. And it is true. Europe must become more independent; it must do more for its defence. A strong Europe also means a strong NATO, and that is the mentality I have brought to the European Union'. European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said this at a joint press conference in Munich with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Bavarian President Markus Soder.
'Last year,' Von der Leyen recalled, 'we did more for defence in Europe than in the previous ten years'. All these 'billions and billions used are intended to create jobs, promote innovation and development, and therefore must also flow into our European defence industry, including in Bavaria, because that is the return on investment we all need'.
Even behind the EU loans for Ukraine, Von der Leyen continued, 'there is a strong signal: we want and need to further strengthen the defence industry base in Europe'.

Rutte: the Russian bear travels at the speed of a snail
"Yesterday, there was broad support for the need to continue to support Ukraine, and also a widespread awareness that we still need to do more for Ukraine, but also an awareness, as far as Ukraine is concerned, that the Russians are registering significant losses day after day: 35,000 dead in December, 30,000 dead in January." NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this at a press point at the Munich Security Conference with Markus Söder, Minister President of the Land of Bavaria, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and Johann Wadepuhl, German Foreign Minister. "While the Russians want to be perceived as a mighty bear, it could be said that they are moving in Ukraine at the speed of a snail in a garden," he added, urging then not to fall "into the trap of Russian propaganda".

Von der Leyen: 'Safe loans will bring investment to the area'
Joint defence procurement financed by Safe loans will support the military industry in the EU and Ukraine, providing a strong 'return on investment', benefiting territories such as Bavaria. This was emphasised by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, speaking in Munich at an event organised by Csu to accompany the security conference. Safe, she recalled, "has allocated billions of euros for joint projects to close gaps and strengthen our defence capabilities. It is clearly stated that 65 per cent, two-thirds, of the products must come from Europe, Ukraine or Europe, and must no longer be purchased from abroad'. This, he continued, is 'for a good reason, because these billions and billions allocated to defence are intended to create jobs and promote innovation and development. Therefore, these investments must flow into our European defence industry, particularly in Bavaria. This is the return on investment we all need,' he concluded.

Thus began an appeal addressed to the Continent's Christians by the Presidents of the Italian Bishops' Conferences, Card. Zuppi, the French one, Card. Aveline, the German one, Msgr. Baetzing, and the Polish one, Msgr. Wojda. "Europe cannot be reduced to an economic and financial market," they say, "on pain of betraying the initial vision of its founding fathers. While respecting the rule of law and rejecting the exclusivist logic of isolationism and violence, it will opt for supranational conflict resolution, choosing appropriate mechanisms and alliances. It must always be ready to resume dialogue, even in cases of conflict, and work towards reconciliation and peace. Europe is called upon to seek alliances that lay the foundations for genuine solidarity between peoples'.

Rubio: the old world is gone, a new geopolitical era opens
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, before boarding the plane that brought him to the Munich Security Conference, told reporters that 'Europe is important to the US', but we live in a 'new geopolitical era', 'the old world has disappeared' and this 'will require all of us to re-examine what it looks like and what our role will be'.
"Frankly, the old world has disappeared, the world I grew up in, and we are living in a new geopolitical era, and this will require all of us to re-examine what that looks like and what our role will be," Rubio told reporters, reiterating that "we are deeply tied to Europe and our future has always been tied to that and will continue to be tied to that."

Zelensky: 'There is no greater victory for Trump than stopping the war'
'I think there is no greater victory for Trump than to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine'. Saying this, in an interview with 'The Atlantic', was the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. 'As his legacy, it is the most important thing,' he added. For the Ukrainian president, moreover, this is also the path to a Republican success in November. "The most advantageous situation for Trump is to do it before the mid-term elections," Zelensky said about the possibility of ending the war. Trump clearly doesn't want more deaths, 'but if we talk like adults, it's a victory for him, a political victory'.

Rubio, I think I will meet Zelensky in Munich

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this before leaving the US for Europe where he will take part in the Munich Security Conference. "We want the war to end," he added, "People are suffering, it's the coldest time of the year, it's unimaginable suffering. That is why wars are bad, and that is why we have worked so hard for over a year to try to end this one'. Rubio finally specified that during this trip 'he will not go' to Russia.

Rubio: 'My message to Munich? Europe is important to us'
'Europe is important to us'. This is the 'message' that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio intends to bring tomorrow in his speech at the Munich conference, one year after the 'shock' of Vice President JD Vance's speech, which had accused Europe of "having abandoned its values". Accusations repeated several times since then, even to the point of being included in the new US National Security Strategy, in which Europe is referred to as 'a civilisation at risk'. 'We're closely connected to Europe,' Rubio assured before leaving for Munich, the first stop on a trip that will also take him to Hungary and Slovakia, to Donald Trump's big populist admirers Prime Ministers Viktor Orban and Robert Fico, 'I think most people in our country can trace their cultural or personal origins back to Europe, so we're deeply connected to Europe and our future has always been connected... So we just have to talk about what that future will look like'. Because, the US diplomatic chief pointed out, "the old world is over, frankly, the world I grew up in, and we are living in a new geopolitical era, which will require all of us to re-examine what that will look like and what our role will be." "We have had many private conversations with many of our allies, who are such, and we must continue to have them," he concluded.
