The vice president of Lukoil was found hanged in the toilet of his office. The shocking death of Vitaly Robertus, 53, had been announced on Wednesday, but the circumstances had not been revealed at first. Lukoil is Russia's largest privately owned oil company.
This was stated by several Telegram channels including Astra and Baza, Russian media close to the Moscow security services. "The top manager committed suicide and died of asphyxiation. He had worked for the company for about 30 years," Baza wrote.
He is the fourth prominent Lukoil-related figure to be found dead since the start of Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine, among a long list of executive deaths.
The Telegram channel VChK-OGPU - with close ties to law enforcement - quoted friends and associates as saying that the manager felt 'persecuted' and feared being framed as part of a criminal investigation and bitter infighting at the top of the company.
According to the channel, the man had held a meeting with his boss Oleg Pashaev, senior vice-president for sales and supplies at Lukoil, Russia's second largest oil giant, and returned to his office.
