Sailing, the America's Cup 2027 to be held in Naples: first time for Italy

The America's Cup will be held, for the first time in history, in Italy. Naples will be the city that will host the 38th edition of the world's most prestigious sailing tournament in 2027. The announcement came from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who thanked "the Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi, the Minister for the Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti, the Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi, Sport and Health, and all those who have worked, with passion and determination, to achieve this great result". Naples already hosted the America's Cup World Series between 2011 and 2013, building a good reputation internationally for this type of event.

"The choice of the Neapolitan capital," stressed the Prime Minister, "will contribute to strengthening the renewed prominence of the South, which in recent years has been able to rediscover its dynamism and pride, registering a growth in GDP and employment above the national average. The organisation of the America's Cup in Naples,' says Meloni, 'will also make it possible to accelerate the impressive redevelopment and regeneration plan launched by the government to transform the Bagnoli area into a modern tourist, seaside, and commercial hub.

The Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, speaks of 'the biggest sporting event ever hosted by Naples, an event of global significance that will see our marvellous Gulf become the stage for spectacular challenges between the world's best sailing teams. It will be an opportunity to show the world not only the beauty of our landscape, but also the city's ability to competently face the great challenges of the present. The races will take place in the extraordinary stretch of water between Castel dell'Ovo and Posillipo,' while Bagnoli, the district of eternal redevelopment that once housed Ilva, will be the base for the challenging teams 'in a strategic area,' the first citizen continued, 'in which the government has chosen to invest decisively in order to finally return it to the city and its citizens. The complex work of reclamation and redevelopment of Bagnoli is already underway and is proceeding according to plan. The America's Cup will be a powerful and additional catalyst for tourism, the economy of the sea, local entrepreneurship, and the training of new skills, offering a concrete preview of what this area can become at the end of the urban regeneration process,' Manfredi declared.
