Saipem: letter of intent for the Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique, worth $32 million
Projected production capacity of 18.6 million tonnes per year
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Saipem, as lead partner of the SMDC joint venture formed with McDermott Energy Solutions (UK), Daewoo Engineering & Construction and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation, has signed a letter of intent with ExxonMobil Moçambique Limitada regarding the midstream development of Phase 1 of the Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique. The letter of intent covers limited preliminary engineering and procurement activities aimed at advancing the design definition and detailed planning of the project, with an initial value of $32 million. The final award of the EPC contract to the SMDC joint venture, covering engineering, procurement and construction activities, is subject to a positive FID by the Area 4 partners (ENH, CNPC, Eni, KOGAS and XRG) and to the granting of the necessary government and regulatory approvals, which are expected by 2026. This new milestone follows the contract for Front-End Engineering Design work awarded to the SMDC partnership in August 2024. The Rovuma LNG onshore project involves the development of an onshore natural gas liquefaction plant on the Afungi Peninsula, comprising two main trains with a total of 12 liquefaction modules, with an expected total production capacity of approximately 18.6 million tonnes of LNG per year.
