Salvini: We will ask the banks to contribute 5 per cent of their profits

“If we ask – and as the Lega we will ask – for a three-year contribution from the top ten Italian banks, based on profit of 30 billioni, you’ll have to settle for 5 per cent a year”. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini in response to a question about how much the banks’ contribution to the next budget might be. ‘I am convinced that the entire majority will support us’ on this proposal, he added, emphasising that ‘I hope that next year the banks will make 40 or 50 billion in profits’.

“I would, however, remind those who express doubts that part of these profits (of the top ten Italian banks, Ed. ) stems from state guarantees – and therefore from the taxpayers – and from costs borne by the taxpayers,” said Salvini. “Let’s say,” he added, “that in the difference between what the bank gives and what the bank asks for, there is scope to ask for a contribution; then, as to how to use it, there is the issue of security. We in the League would like to double the number of officers in the ‘Strade Sicure’ programme.” Salvini then cited the Spanish example: “Let’s just say that I agree with nothing the Sánchez government has done, except for the economic intervention they carried out on the Spanish banks.”

As for possible internal rifts within the League, Salvini said: ‘We are working to strengthen the team. That said, Italians need anything but internal controversies and squabbles. Anyone who wants to help strengthen the League is welcome. We are working towards an Italian – but also an international – Pontida.”
