Convention FdI, Meloni scherza con Salvini: "Grazie a Matteo anche se ci ha preferito il ponte"

First Matteo Salvini who accuses: "Those who wanted to kill Fico are from the pro-European left". Then his loyal Claudio Borghi who announces that he has tabled the bill to repeal the obligation to display the EU flag in institutional premises. The League is back to riding anti-Europeanism with the aim of recovering votes on the right, perhaps taking them away from Giorgia Meloni's 'Brothers'.

An operation that has been going on for some time and in which the latest are the repeated attacks on the outgoing president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen , accompanied by the request to Meloni to oppose her re-election and the inclusion of General Roberto Vannacci. But before that there were the congratulations sent to Donald Trump for the results of the primaries and the support for the tractor march.

A defence campaign

.

Salvini is looking for a perspective, for a way out in an election campaign that he is inevitably forced to play defensively. The outcome in any case will be a strong (or very strong) downsizing of the League in the next parliament. Going from 34% to a single-digit result could put its leadership in question. It is therefore necessary to prepare oneself in good time.

The alliances

.

The Carroccio leader bets on possible new alliances in Europe. The pact just signed in the Netherlands between Geert Wilders, the sovereignist leader of the extreme right, winner of the elections with the Party for Freedom - which militates in the Identity and Democracy group together with Marine Le Pen and the League - with the movement of the former liberal prime minister Mark Rutte who sits among the Renew's Macronians suggests that vetoes may fall.

Giorgia's Web

.

For Salvini in any case, the game remains very complicated. First of all because the negotiator will be Meloni, who is also the head of the government and leader of the relative majority party. The premier has been weaving her web for some time on the assumption: 'I talk to everyone'. She does not rule out supporting von der Leyen's encore but neither does she rule out giving the green light to a different name in order to reach a satisfactory agreement. The stakes are high and Italy, which has to reckon with an off-target deficit and an abnormally high and growing debt, needs allies in the upper echelons of the Union. "We are aiming for a commissioner with weight," the Prime Minister said in recent days, referring above all to economic expertise. But that is not enough.

Season of pitfalls

After the Europeans, a season full of pitfalls begins for the Prime Minister. The first act will be the opening of the infringement procedure, then the programmatic objectives and therefore the manoeuvre will have to be presented, with the need to recover at least the coverage (10 billion) to extend the tax wedge cut, while in the majority the post-vote dross will inevitably be felt.
