San Marzano PDO, record-breaking campaign: never so high revenues for farmers
The 2025 Agro Nocerino-Sarnese campaign closes with an average price paid to farmers of 0.66 euro per kilo, the highest since the Protected Designation of Origin has existed

A historic year for the Pomodoro San Marzano dell'Agro Nocerino-Sarnese DOP: very high quality, exceptional yield and above all unprecedented remuneration for producers. In fact, the 2025 campaign closed with an average price paid to farmers of €0.66 per kilo, the highest since the Protected Designation of Origin has existed.
To understand the magnitude of the result, it is enough to compare it with the values set for long tomatoes in the Ocm Sud Pomodoro agreement, which stand at 0.16 €/kg: San Marzano is worth more than four times as much. A range that this year has directly rewarded the farms, thanks also to a campaign that saw 18 million kilos of tomatoes sent for processing in Campania's canning factories.
"San Marzano DOP is in great demand for its balance of flavour, ease of processing and stability during cooking,' emphasises the President of the Consortium, Tommaso Romano. 'We are investing to increase the number of hectares under cultivation and to supply the market with a greater quantity of certified product.
Alongside the production chapter there is that ofb>brand protection. On the international market, San Marzano is among the most imitated products and the risk of 'sounding' - the use of the name on non-PDO labels that exploit brand appeal - remains high. The Consortium's objective is to consolidate the key message: 'It is San Marzano only if it is PDO'. In the absence of official logos, it is another type of tomato, which can mislead consumers and penalise honest operators.
With this twofold message - enhancement of quality and fight against counterfeiting - the Consortium is taking part in Anuga 2025, the world food & beverage fair scheduled in Cologne from 4 to 8 October. In Hall 5.2 (stand C052), buyers and operators will be able to taste Campania's iconic tomato, presented this year as "the best San Marzano in years".
