Sanoma, Italian teachers confirm 'blended' teaching

Paper and digital books are complementary tools, both essential for learning. School publishing: European Teacher Survey 2024

Sanoma, the European leader in school publishing, presents in our country the results of the European Teacher Survey 2024, a survey analysing what factors affect the learning of pupils in primary and secondary schools in eight European countries (Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain and Italy).

It is a study involving more than 10,000 teachers every year from 2021, with the aim of analysing and illustrating the European landscape and the challenges for schools in the development of learning processes.

Italy and Europe compared: the results

In the European Teacher Survey 2024, a first, substantial piece of evidence emerges, namely the importance of the paper book, which is not set aside but which, combined with the potential of digital, makes a difference in the learning paths of boys and girls.

An initial difference emerges between Italy and other European countries. In fact, according to 70% of the more than 2,300 Italian teachers involved in the survey, digital media in teaching methods do not outweigh paper books and traditional teaching materials in general. Therefore, paper and digital together play a complementary and fundamental role in fostering the learning processes of students.
In the most digitised European countries, where teaching was almost exclusively digital, we are witnessing a sort of return to the paper book, which is not only returning to being central to teaching, but is even defined as more relevant than digital in the learning process: 57% of primary school teachers in Finland and 60% of secondary school teachers in Sweden think so.

Three aspects

The European Teacher Survey 2024 then identifies 3 aspects that can positively influence the learning process:

- the motivation of students to learn

- access to quality materials provided by publishers

- the role of the teacher as a guide in the learning process.

On average, in Europe, motivation is indicated as crucial for good results by 69% of primary school teachers and 72% of secondary school teachers.

Access to quality materials supports learning for 51% of primary teachers and 53% of secondary teachers. The role of the teacher is important in supporting students for 63% of primary teachers and 50% of secondary teachers.

Customisation of routes

Both Italian and European teachers also attach great importance to the personalisation of study paths and the monitoring of performance.
In fact, on average, 90% of the teachers involved believe that access to teaching tools and materials capable of proposing personalised teaching paths, which therefore take into account the needs of individual students and their level of preparation, is fundamental, so that a specific learning path can be defined.

In this regard, teachers in Italy believe that personalisation should be about:

- theoretical explanation and reading activities for 94% of primary teachers and 91% of secondary teachers

- classroom exercises for 98% and 95%

- homework for 90% of teachers in both primary and secondary classes

- tests and verifications for 90% and 92% of the teachers.

Monitoring

Monitoring the performance of individual students is another key aspect. In this respect, teachers in Europe are very supportive of the use of specific digital tools and instruments: on average, 73% of primary school teachers and 70% of secondary school teachers say so.

Specifically, in Italy, our teachers believe that such tools are useful for:

- monitor, over time, the performance of each student according to 88% of primary teachers and 87% of secondary teachers

- compare the results obtained by individual pupils, or groups of pupils, for 71% and 72% of the teachers involved

- support students by showing them what they need to focus on in order to improve their results: 84% and 87% of primary and secondary school teachers, respectively, stated this.
