Sapienza ranks first in Italia and 153rd in the world in the ARWU rankings

Sapienza is the top university in Italia and ranks 153rd in the world according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published on 15 August.

Sapienza is the top university in Italia and 153rd globally, according to data provided by the independent organisation ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which compiles the ranking – one of the most important in the higher education sector. ARWU ranks the world’s top 1,000 universities out of over 2,500 surveyed and an estimated 18,000 worldwide.

There are six evaluation criteria: Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to former students (10%) or researchers at the individual university (20%); the number of highly cited researchers according to Clarivate Analytics (20%); publications in *Nature* and *Science* (20%); citations of publications in the field of technology and society (20%). These criteria are then correlated with the academic staff, yielding a further measure of per capita productivity (10%).
