Tortolì airport in Sardinia becomes part of the new short-haul network, the Regional air mobility launched by Enac. The network envisages the development of scheduled commercial connections between several 'city-pairs' of airports of territorial interest. Minor facilities whose runways are used, in most cases, by flight schools or private vehicles. Within a short time, however, small planes used for short connections could also fly.

3.5 million euro work

.

This is an opportunity for the Sardinian airport located in the eastern part of the region (140 kilometres from Cagliari and 100 from Nuoro), for which modernisation and redevelopment work worth more than three million euros is planned. It is no coincidence that the regional councillor for transport, Barbara Manca, speaks of a 'positive signal'. "We welcome Enac's initiative to include Tortolì airport in the national short-haul network (Regional Air Mobility),' she says. 'We have recently managed to remove the obstacles to the spending of 3.5 million euro on upgrading and bringing the airport up to standard, an indispensable step to obtain certification as a civil airport and avoid the loss of resources earmarked for the Ogliastra airport.

This is an important step to allow what many are calling the 'promotion' of the structure from which one can fly to Rome. And facilitate connections with the marine and naturalistic area devoted, above all, to tourism.

A complementary stopover

.

"This is a strategic choice that allows Ogliastra to look to the future with greater confidence,' he adds. 'We have unblocked a complex procedure at a European and national level, safeguarding crucial resources and thus giving substance to a project that the territory had been waiting for for years. There is no competition with the other airports on the island, but, as the regional executive's representative also emphasises, the desire to relaunch the structure by putting it forward to become complementary to the others. "We are well aware of the importance of this airport and we are defining an organic strategy to be included in the new Regional Transport Plan," the executive representative continues. In the dedicated territorial tables within the process of drafting the RTP, which we will soon convene, we will have the opportunity to open a structured discussion with local administrations and communities, to share choices that will have a long-term impact'.
