Savona: Finance Police and Customs seize over three quintals of high-purity cocaine
Operation at the port of Vado Ligure. The drugs, with a total value of 120 million euros, were hidden in a consignment of plantains inside a container from Colombia
Key points
Over three quintals of pure cocaine. Officers from the Savona Provincial Command, with the support of officers from the Genoa Economic and Financial Police Unit, and together with officials from the Anti-Fraud Department of the Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) in Savona, seized, at the port of Vado Ligure, 300 blocks of the narcotic substance. Following analyses carried out at the time of the inspection, it was confirmed that the substance was pure cocaine.
Shipment from Colombia
The large quantity of cocaine was concealed in a consignment of plantains, inside a container arriving from one of the main ports in Colombia. The operation is the result of intensive analysis and monitoring carried out on the trade routes linking South America with the port of Vado Ligure, which is a major hub for trade flows to Europe.
Estimated value of 120 million euros
The 340 kilograms of cocaine seized would, had it been placed on the market, have generated substantial profits for criminal organisations, with an estimated retail value of around 120 million euros. The seizure forms part of an ongoing and targeted campaign to combat international drug trafficking, aimed, amongst other things, at protecting the most vulnerable sections of the population, who are often exposed to the harmful effects of this criminal activity.
Cooperation between the Guardia di Finanza and Customs
As a joint statement explains, ‘once again, the collaboration between the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs and Monopolies Agency serves as a valuable bulwark for public safety and the maintenance of public order’.
