On the eighth day of OpenAI's pre-Christmas announcements, the news arrived that many insiders were probably expecting: ChatGpt Search is henceforth accessible to everyone free of charge, and the gauntlet that the Sam Altman-led company raises against Google can no longer go unnoticed. What changes for the millions and millions of users who have embraced ChatGPT's cause to discover the 'wonders' (and risks) of artificial intelligence? Quite a lot, because if the chatbot made public on a global scale as of the end of 2022 was 'trained' by the programmers on a dataset of out-of-date content, thanks to the engine made available last October, the chatbot can search online to retrieve more recent information and respond to users' prompts in a broader and more precise manner. And now this engine, until now only available for a fee, becomes an everyday tool available to anyone, even in Italy, and completely free of charge.
How to use the service and new features
To benefit from ChatGpt Search's functionalities, one simply has to log in to the ChatGpt website or app after necessarily 'logging in' and select the 'search' button to activate the online engine. Its pluses compared to a traditional search engine were already known (the AI does not answer questions with links but with a conversational text, complete with sources from which the results were extracted), and with today's announcement OpenAI has promised further improvements induced by user feedback, which we summarise below: ChatGPT Search has become faster for mobile devices and enhanced the experience with maps; the service arrives on Advanced Voice (for the time being, this option does not cover Italy, however), which means being able to use the search function while interacting with ChatGPT. If this is not a direct attack on BigG and the moves that the Mountain View giant is pursuing with Gemini in terms of search, it's not far off, and the words of OpenAI's managers leave little doubt in this regard. And after the opening of Sora, the platform that can generate 5- or 20-second films from textual indications with artificial intelligence, the new GptSearch adds a new piece to the strategy that Microsoft is pursuing behind the scenes.
